How to reduce sensitivity of USB mouse?

How to reduce sensitivity of USB mouse? I've lost control of it.

I'm working through a list of files in Finder. If I click on a file (as you do to show it in the finder view pane) then the Preview app is immediately opened and made active. It stops me continuing my browsing.

If I look though a playlist in iTunes and want to just see what other items I have by that artist then the list of songs by that artist becomes active, overriding what I was already doing.

It is a mouse connected by USB cable. There does not seem to be a control in System Preferences that will stop this mouse overriding my choices.

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), iMAc (20 - inch, mid 2007)

Thank you all for taking time to look at my issue.

I have tried the mouse settings in different setting combinations and tested them. I do not have options for a specific customisation for the mouse - its' quite generic.

I think the over-responsiveness may be a feature of the operating system? I have recently reinstalled OSX from a backup to resolve a different problem. It wasn't possible to install OSX clean from the app store.

Since my restore I notice that selecting a picture file in Finder (I just want to see the thumbnail in Finder) will activate a full screen Preview window. Selecting a file in Finder is a soft touch, not a hard click.

Trying to explain this as clearly as I can.

Also in iTunes if I don't like whats playing and want to find out what else I have by the artist so I can delete it I find that just selecting them in the list of artists then activates them instead of the playlist I was working through. Again I would say it was a gentle touch to select the item, not a hard click to make some action happen.
