Is there a digital video recorder (DVR) for Apple TV?

I'm seriously considering getting Apple TV. However, a deal breaker would be if it's not possible to record programs off it. Is there a digital video recorder (DVR) that could be used for Apple TV? Is TiVo also compatible to Apple TV?

iMac, macOS Sierra (10.12.3), Avid Media Composer v8.8

I found this and will be buying it:

AVerMedia EzRecorder ER130 ($130) and ER310 ($180)

You will need to supply a drive: USB HDD or USB flash drive for ER130, internal HDD or USB HDD or USB flash drive for ER310. Pair with the $18 "Etekcity 1X2 HDMI splitter" to strip the HDCP protection.

----> HDMI Splitter (output 1) ----> AVerMedia -----> (input HDMI port 1) TV

ATV

----> HDMI Splitter (output 2) ----> (input HDMI port 2) TV

For those who say it doesn't make sense to have a DVR on ATV, consider the following:

1. NFL Sunday Ticket which has an ATV app. Content is only available live and contains commercials - the perfect reason for a DVR.

2. Anyone getting their local TV feeds (CBS, NBC, FOX, etc.) or cable (History Channel, SYFY, etc.) through AppleTV may want to record to skip the commercials.

3. People who have a lot of internet extended outages.

That's just Direct TV's doing, Sunday Ticket belongs to them. If you get the NFL Game Pass and the official NFL App, you can watch all games with no ads. Replay them all through the season. And can watch the games Live or after the fact at any point with no ads.

No commercials on paid streams of shows. And no actual local Tv feeds on a Apple TV. CBS for instance has CBSN live stream for free with ads yes, and you can't skip those, but most others do not offer such a stream. CBSN is just the 24hr news stream, nothing else. Again on demand show streams and and movie streams have no ads.

Things like Sling will have ads, but Sling also offers their own cloud based DVR option now.

This might be the one reason to DVR. But if there are internet outages the DVR may not complete recording what you want to see.

Again DVR'ing from an On Demand streaming service box, makes very little sense.

Phil you are entitled to your opinion - if you don't think it works, then it's not for you. For others, DVR+ATV does have utility, which is why the OP asked the question. It's also the reason why I bought one for my AppleTV. Hopefully my original post was helpful....and I also to hope I remember to post the results of my test with the AVerMedia 130 and splitter.

I bought Sunday Ticket specifically to watch my out of market team each week. I don't have DirectTV, just the streaming version of Sunday Ticket. NFL Gamepass does NOT have live game. NFL Gamepass is a nice complement to live or DVR'd games, but does not a replacement. Gamepass starts at 8pm, great for watching additional games during the week, but not for watching live or slightly time-shifted games. A DVR+ATV+Sunday Ticket = NFL joy.

How do you get commercial free CBS, FOX, NBC, and ABC? Using an ATV I downloaded the FoxNOW app to watch "So you think you can dance" with my wife. We are able to watch every show this season, but there are LOTs of commercials. This a wonderful reason to use ATV+DVR.

This might be the one reason to DVR. But if there are internet outages the DVR may not complete recording what you want to see.

In areas with winter storms (1/2 the USA) can end up with many days with partial or full outages, especially with dish-based internet access. ATV+DVR can record hundreds of hours of shows while the weather is good, then play back from the DVR when the storm cuts off their internet access and keeps them huddled indoors next to the warm glow of their LED TV.

NFL Gamepass does NOT have live game.

They do, and specifically state advertise as much on their own website:

https://gamepass.nfl.com/packages?redirected=true

Enjoy all 256 games live or on-demand each season, including live playoffs and Super Bowl LII.

CBS offers a no ads subscription to their All Access service.

Others may have something similar.

Not sure about FoxNow though.

The way it works is if you are paying for it, it should have no ads and be available on demand at any point.

If you are getting ads, its no better than traditional cable, or satellite TV, and you can already DVR that.

If it works for you great, its just not something that may work for other people.

The point of this posting is to find DVR solutions for Apple TV. You goal seems to be to prove that a DVR is not needed for Apple TV, yet some want it. Yes CBS allows one to pay $10/mo to avoid commericals, ala carte will add up quickly. A DVR is a one time expense that can do many things as I have mentioned in the previous posts.

At the bottom of your page - NFL Game Pass | Live Preseason Games & Game Replays.....

"NFL Game Pass does NOT include live regular season, playoff, or Super Bowl game broadcasts. "

If you combine game pass with sunday ticket, then you can watch live...

"Get a special offer and watch LIVE out-of-market games when you add NFL Game Pass to your purchase of NFLSUNDAYTICKET.TV MAX"

It's okay. Playback is fine, but FF/Rew controls are just so-so.

---------positives---------

Press the record button and walk away - it will record whatever you have it hooked up to for hours/days (depending on drive size).

---------negatives---------

Slow response time. Clunky Interface. Doesn't remember last location in a played video. Crowded remote.

On Sling TV most channels will let you watched past aired content on demand after the fact.

https://www.cnet.com/news/sling-tv-everything-you-need-to-know/

On the other hand nearly every channel has shows you can watch on-demand, instantly. Most of channels feature "3 Day Replay," allowing you to watch any show aired within the past three days.

Direct TV Now does something similar:

http://www.theverge.com/2016/11/30/13788934/directv-now-att-internet-tv-service- questions-pricing-channels

While the BBC News would Air Live again most shows and airings would then be available on the demand streaming after being aired.

Also both those services are working on their own DVR features within their own Apps for this year.

I don't know of any DVR which will record from an external source other than the aerial or cable connection. That's not to say there isn't one, but it seems unlikely. Apple TV's main function is to access existing recorded material and stream it to order. In many cases this will be rented films or TV programs where the rental expires 48 hours after you start watching it; so if you could record it to another device you would be breaching that rental and one would expect there to be DRM to prevent it. Purchased films and shows can be bought on your computer and streamed from there to the ATV as required.

Apple TV is an on demand streaming box. There is no real point in recording anything if you can just watch it whenever you want. There is no live TV, and there is no programming schedule. Everything is available whenever you want to watch it. Even live events such as sports games can be watched after the fact at any point through their apps.

In any case most content on the Apple TV is copyrighted and protected, so I doubt there is anything out there that could successfully record it, but there is nothing stopping you from connecting the HDMI output to any type of DVR box you may have and attempting to record it.

Mar 2, 2017 7:44 AM in response to Orange County California

it would not make sense

it can't record the stuff it already stream, the storage can only be used for apps

it has not connection to media from other sources then internet or shared iTunes lib

if it was possible then it would require an app to access some other hardware over your lan network

and stream from that rather then from some internet service

judging from how much work to make such a product and how low the demand seem to be I don't see producing such a

product would be profitable.

Mar 2, 2017 11:27 AM in response to Orange County California

But if I subscribed to an app, like Sling TV or DirecTV Now as examples, would I not be getting live TV? Or is everything On Demand regardless of what app I subscribe to? If that's the case, then I guess my question is moot.

Like for instance, I know DirectTV Now carries BBC World News, so I'm guessing it must be live.
