Have run disk utility in sierra which reports 11+ gig of purgeable space on hd. No apparent means to do so. How do you activate the purge on the identified space in disk utility.

Hello scubadiver,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I understand from your post that you would like to know how to purge the purgeable space on your hard drive. The following article will explain what Purgeable means:

The answer to your question is if you have enabled Optimize Storage, the storage identified as "purgable" will be automatically deleted from your Mac when that space is required, but those deleted items will remain available to download once again to local storage should you require it. Those features are explained in the Apple Support documents provided.

You do not need to take any action to remove files identified as "purgable".

To free up space on your internal drive activate as many options that you are comfortable with. Purgable files are little used files that can be saved to iCloud, trash that can be automatically removed by the OS, little accessed media files purchased through iTunes which can be removed from the internal storage & automatically downloaded next time they are accessed, etc.
