Not enough free space when there is

When syncing my iPod touch, a message appears on iTunes that there is not enough free space and therefore I can't sync any new music... but when referring to my iPod touch, there is plenty of space available. What can I do?

Thank you for responding so quickly. I took a photo when I asked the question, but I was doing it from my phone and the file size was too big, so wasn't able to include it...

As you can see by the photo, iTunes is saying one thing, whereas my iPod is saying another. And so I'm not sure if it is iTunes or the iPod that is incorrect. After a few more failed syncs, I removed the 4Gb video, but kept the new music that I was trying to sync across. The sync then worked, the new 'Available' storage on the iPod reads 8.17Gb, so I'm confused as to why the 4Gb video won't sync across (the file is compatible with iTunes and the iPod, as I have previously had it on my iPod).

Hello Justin,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, you are unable to sync music from iTunes to your iPod touch because you're getting a message that there isn’t enough space. It sounds like you're trying to sync more music to the iPod touch than there is available space on the iPod touch, so I would start with selecting less items to sync and test if that will resolve your issue.

Sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iTunes on your computer using USB

iOS, itself, needs a certain minimum of free data storage space to function properly/nominally.

Typically more than 2 GBs and I advise maintaining between 3-4 GBs of free storage space, at all times.

Your iPod simply did not have enough avalable free data storage space to copy data to its buffer, then to the device because your iPod Touch didn't have enough free data storage space to hold onto the data, while transferring, AND to keep iOS running.

You never, EVER want to completely fill up a mobile computing device OR computer with data.

The operating systems of these computing devices need a certain amount a data space available to the OS for it to operate normally and optimally.

Thanks for replying, Justin349, and that additional info, it really helps! It sounds like you're trying to sync a 4 GB video from iTunes and your iPod touch is showing there should be 8 GB available. Another way to test your issue is to uncheck the boxes for syncing Music and other content, sync your iPod touch and verify that content is not synced. Then check the boxes to sync Music and other content again and try syncing to your iPod touch.

Also, I would verify that you're not using the Sync All option for things like Movies or Photos as that might explain why more content is being synced than what you're expecting. Let us know the results of these steps. We'll help you get through this.

Have a great day and thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!
