Can someone please tell us what the difference between the Apple_Boot partition and the Apple_Boot Recovery HD partition is in these screenshots of the DISKUTIL LIST command? We are trying to FileVault and can't and i noticed the HDs that have this Apple_Boot partition will not FileVault. But the Apple_Boot Recovery HD will:

You don't need to zap the drive. Just reinstall the operating system.
First, try restarting using Recovery Mode (Command+R). If that doesn't work, restart using Internet Recovery (Command+Option+R). Reinstalling the OS will write/rewrite the Recovery HD.
When you get the the OS X or macOS Utilities Screen, choose the Reinstall OS selection. This will reinstall the OS on top of itself without harming your user accounts, data or apps. Afterwards, open the App Store and reapply Updates. Then, you can enable FileVault from System Preferences / Security & Privacy.
Note: When you FileVault a volume that is HFS+, the FileVault process will create a CoreStorage volume before it encrypts the volume. You do not need to have a CoreStorage volume to start with.
I purchased this Mac used (2012 MacBook Pro), and it has 1 partition per disk utility. If I use the command-R or command-option-R to reinstall the OS, will it do it without losing anything? It will keep all my finder & email settings and installed software? I just spent weeks recovering from a crashed drive on my old mac by moving everything to a "new" 2012 mac and i really don't want to have to do all this again.
Strange! Wonder how that happened? We received the computer like this. Brand new! I guess we need to zap the drive and start all over. Any tips on best practices for this?
FileVault and Recovery Partition
