AVCHD import to iMovie on iPad

iMovie feature request: allow import of AVCHD files directly to iMovie on iPad

In the meantime, here's a work-around.

You'll need the following (or similar):

  1. An iPad
  2. AVCHD files on an SD card
  3. A $33 - RAVPower Model: RP-WD01 File Hub (an web-addressable wi-fi device with SD Card reader and USB connectors, which also allows you to back up SD card data to USB thumb drive, among other functions)
  4. Documents - an ipad app which can read and copy files to your ipad from a number of sources (though I couldn't get it to work directly with an SD card to lightning adapter)
  5. iConvert Pro - a $6 app that allows you to convert AVCHD files to MPEG4 files which you can then import to iMovie

To prep files for iMovie

  1. Turn on the FileHub
  2. Connect iPad to FileHub wi-if
  3. Browse to 10.10.10.254
  4. Connect the FileHub to local wi-fi to connect to the Internet
  5. Open the Documents App on the iPad
  6. Browse to 10.10.10.254
  7. Go to Explorer, navigate to Private/AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM
  8. Pick the file(s) you want to transfer
  9. Save them to Documents/Downloads
  10. Open iConvert
  11. Hit "+" (in upper left)/ "Other apps"/Documents/Downloads
  12. Select the file(s) - then Convert/Advanced -> Output format: mov. Video encoder: mpeg4
  13. In iConvert, then select the "Converted" tab at the bottom of the screen. Select and hold the converted file, for Opening in iMovie

Let me know if you have any questions, or to report success, or better methods. Thanks!

iPad Pro, iOS 10.2.1
