InDesign CS6 seems slow to launch

Hello Mac fans,

I have an iMac, 2.9 GHz with 16 GB of operating memory running system 10.11.6. Recently InDesign CS 6 is taking 1.25 minutes to launch. I did not notice this sluggishness before nor the color wheel spinning during the launch.

Here is what I have done so far:

  1. Cleared the InDesign cache
  2. Deleted the InDesign Preferences
  3. Reset SMC
  4. Ran hard drive and system Utilities—all looks good
  5. Ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to check for any issues
  6. Managed fonts

I also ran a test to make sure my INDD document was not corrupt. I saved it with a different name and opened it. This seemed to launch INDD a little faster. I created a new document without images in place, then saved it and relaunched it. No problem. It opened quickly without the spinning color wheel.

Then I added images to this new template, saved the work and quit the application. When launching the document the the spinning color wheel popped up again and spun for over a minute before releasing the document for me to work on.

Is anyone else experiencing the prolonged application launch and spinning color wheel? Is this normal?

Hi Michel,

Thanks for your response. I checked everything you suggested and even packaged the files, then launched the document from the collected folder, and this is what I am still getting:

I am hoping that my hard drive is not failing. I ran utilities and checked the hard drive and partitions, all seems fine. I can't tell if my operating memory is failing as I do not have the tools to test.

All other applications (Photoshop and Illustrator) seem fine, but I will need to run some more tests with memory heavy files to see the computer lags.

Download and run Etrecheck. Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Thanks, OT.

I just ran Etrecheck for the color wheel spinning issue. Let me know what you suggest:

When dropping images into InDesign, do you use thumbnail/placeholder links to images in another folder or location?

Do you keep these images collected in a common folder so they can be accessed more easily by InDesign, if you are using thumbnail/placeholder/low res image links? Or are these images located all over in different locations?

OR

Do you embed the full image/s into the InDesign document?

Embedding the actual images into InDesign would make opening InDesign document file sizes much larger and woyld make opening InDesign files take longer to open.
