iPhone does not appear in sidebars for photos or finder

I want to download photos from my iPhone to my iMac but the iPhone does not appear in the sidebar for Photos or in the Finder, though it does show up in and connect with iTunes.

This is true for my iPhone and for my wife's, though I had previously had success with downloading photos from my iPhone.

Thumb drives also do not appear on the desktop or in the Finder.
