mapping mac keyboard to windows RDP

Using iMac with latest OS X 10.12.3 sierra. Can connect to a Windows 10 Remote Desktop. One windows application (not all) shows a screen but keystrokes do nothing - no text characters are entered. The application is actually a client to an AS400 system and it has worked in the past. So - how do I get keystrokes entered on the mac to map correctly on this application?

BTW NOT using Mac RDP but Windows RDP is target connection.

Suspects include Windows 10 and Mac Sierra.

Can you test the behaviour using remote desktop from another Windows machine? The Mac might not be the issue.

Can you invoke the On-Screen Keyboard on the remote Windows machine, and will that work in the AS400 client?
