How do I split and export a clip?

I have split the clip in the bottom of the iMovie GUI. I cannot seem to separate it out of the bottom portion of the GUI in order to save and export it. I have tried creating a new Project and pasting but that does not separate it out. I feel that I am missing some sort of fundamental way to use this software. All I want is the modified clip saved and exported in order to upload.

Hi,

Assuming that you are using iMovie 10, after you split the clip in the timeline Select only the part that you want to export. Edit/Copy it. Open a new project. Edit/Paste it into the new project. Export it (share) to your desktop. Upload to whatever website you wish.
