iCloud Drive Reliability

I store most of my computer files on the iCloud Drive hoping they'll be more secure than on my computer where they might be subject to viruses and accidental deletions. Is iCloud reliable enough to put my mind to rest or must I also backup these files from the Cloud?

We will all define reliability differently.

Stored on your iCloud Drive ... viruses are a non risk.

Accidental deletion would be mostly up to you.

- Keep your account active.

- Don't lose access to it by forgetting your password or getting locked out of your account.

- Keep a local copy secured on your own regardless.

If you want a cloud provider to take full responsibility for your files, I don't think that's reasonable.

IMO... cloud based storage is Plan B, never Plan A.

In my opinion iCloud is very secure as long as you have a strong password and use 2-factor authentication. That said, I think it's still very important to have backups of your important files. Having multiple options to restore your files is better than relying on just one option.

Time machine is a good choice and makes it extremely easy to backup your files. All you need is an external drive. It's easy to setup and use.
