CarPlay interrupts the radio in my Audi

Today my iPhone began interrupting my radio repeatedly while plugged into my USB port in my 2017 Audi A4. It jumps in every 30 seconds or so, stopping whatever is playing on the radio, and forcing the system into CarPlay mode. It's never done that before, but now it won't stop doing it. I've already updated software and restarted everything. I'm using an iPhone 7 with iOS 10.2.1. What gives? How can I fix it?

Hi,

I've just had the exact same issue in my new VW Tiguan, started happening on day 3 of ownership. Just done some searches and it seems it is not uncommon and occurs on lots of different cars, with no clear solution offered. Some even have open tickets with Apple to try and to identify the issue.

Some suggest it is a poor lightning cable connection causing intermittent connection / disconnection but I'm not buying that. You would know this surely when charging the phone.

One post suggests that Car Play will always try and take priority over the cars selected mode if it is the first connection made upon starting up. Therefore, at the end of a journey, disconnect your phone first and put your car into radio mode. When you get back into your car, start up with the car still in radio mode 'then' connect your phone, at the end of the sequence. The poster suggests this will prioritise your cars system over Car Play. Car Play will still work when called upon but will not keep assuming priority.

This is just some advice I have seen with my searches and I'm yet to try it. Really hoping it works because the idea that Car Play and the car audio system are incompatible is quite ridiculous.

Fingers crossed.

I have had this happening in my 2018 Q5 as well. Funny thing is that it did not happen for the months of Sept & Oct- I only noticed the Car Play taking over from the Radio since November, which if I recall was around when iOS11 came out. (though I note the OP posted in March - so not sure about that)

Would be great if folks with the Audi MMI system running an iPhone pre-iOS11 could comment on if they are having the problem. I have a strong suspicion that it was part of the Do Not Disturb / Car Play package that screwed this up. So now I have to choose between listening to the radio & charging my phone - Thanks Apple!
