The keys on my keyboard won't stay lit, why?

Why can't I get my keyboard to stay lit, so I can see the keys. The light behind the keys go off after I turn it on.

iPad Pro, iOS 10.2.1

Oh my, problem solved. After much messing about I re-discovered the keyboard brightness buttons on the Logitech keyboard. When the ipad is initially attached to the keyboard, the keys always light up briefly and dim slowly, no matter what has been done to the brightness button. BUT, if the dimmer button has been previously touched, as in the last time it was used (or last week or last month?), the keys won't light up when you start typing. So it seems that there is something wrong: the keys light up when the ipad is connected, the keys light up when wiggling the ipad on the keyboard, but then nothing during typing. I think Logitech should revert to lighted keys anytime the ipad is disconnected; it's easy, quick and obvious to turn the keyboard light off if wanted, but not so obvious what the situation is when it only lights up some times.

If this is a third party smart connector keyboard, such as the logi create, the keys only light up when you are actually typing. Since smart connector keyboards are being powered by the iPad Pro's battery, I assume the idea is not to unnecessarily use the battery when you are not actually typing.

My logi create keyboard keys only light when being used, and then quickly turn off once you stop typing. There is no way to change that setting on the keyboard.

My Logitech keyboard for my 9.7 iPad Pro used to light up as I was typing, but recently it has quit lighting up except if I disconnect the keyboard and reconnect, it briefly lights up and then quits after a few seconds. As I type this the keyboard remains dark. I've experimented with the possibility of a bad connection, but don't think that's the problem: I can get the keyboard to light up (as above), wait for it to go dark, and then ever so gently press one key. It never lights up again.

Just to be clear: the keyboard apparently remembers the last action of the keyboard light button even after the ipad and keyboard are separated. This means that when the iPad Pro is reconnected to the keyboard the keys will not light during typing if they had been turned off during some previous usage. This leads to a confusing situation when the ipad and keyboard are connected: the keys light up initially and dim after a few seconds (always happens, regardless of previous session button action), but then sometimes won't light up during subsequent typing depending on an action that was taken during a previous session. My recommendation to Logitech is that the keyboard should NOT remember the keyboard light action from a previous session, but should always revert to lighting the keys (during typing) each time the ipad and keyboard are assembled. The user can easily hit the no-light button if desired. Turning the lights off each time the ipad and keyboard are connected is less confusing than having the keys fail to light because of an action that may have occurred a day eariler.
