I currently have an iPhone five with the latest software update and backed up to my computer. I just got the new iPhone seven. When I went to activate it in back it up from the backup it told that the software was too old and recommended that I restart the iPhone as new if I want to sync my iPhone seven from the latest backup. Very confusing.

If your old iphone was up to date at 10.2.1 then that would be fine
Could be that your new iphone is not up to date as it should be.
I think they come as 10.1.1?
But if you set up your new phone and just update the software
Then erase it
You should be able to throw that backup onto that new device
It's a roundabout way but it's a shot
