I am wanting to put a half circle of one colour over a circle of another colour without using the freehand draw tool in PAGES.

I am wanting to put a half circle of one colour in the bottom half of a circle that is another colour.

Surrounding the circle is another colour.

Hi cd,

Something like this?

User uploaded file

The image above is composed of three shape and a mask. The cyan shape is a rectangle with an aspect ratio of 2:1 (w:h).

The purple shape is a duplicate of the cyan shape. Both have been formatted from the 'square' shape in the shapes button menu to:

  • set the stroke to None
  • set the fill colours to the colours you want.

The two rectangles were then placed together, one above the other, with their edges abutting (a slight overlap is also acceptable), then Grouped using the Arrange menu item of that name.

Format (menu) > Mask with shape shows all shapes greyed when accessed with an inserted shape selected, so the next step was to take a screen shot (to the clipboard) of the two coloured square, then paste that screen shot back into the Pages document, thus changing it from a group of two inserted shapes to a png image of that shape.

Select the pasted image and go Format > Mask with Shape > Oval. Edit the mask to the size you need to fit the full width or height of the 'square' (which will now probably be a 'not quite square').

With the circle now defined, add a Square shape, and resize it to cover the circle with as much overlap as you need.

Select the square, and move it toward the back until it is behind the circle.

Select both the circle and the square, the go Arrange > Align > Center, then Arrange > Align > Middle.

Make any additional adjustments to the size and shape of the square, and repeat the Arrange steps. What satisfied, select both shapes, then go Arrange > Group to combine them into a single object which you can then resize to fit your need.

Barry

Hi cd,

Here's an example constructed in Pages 3.0.3:

Pixelation on the edge of the circle is partly due the image being a screen shot of a screen shot originally taken from a relatively small image on a pre-retina scren.

The black line between the two semi circles is due to my not changing the border to 'none' on the rectangle covering the bottom half of the circle.

The image was constructed using the same steps as the Pages 4.3 image in my earlier post.

There is nothing in the OP post that suggests the degree of Pages knowledge, or graphics design wisdom, with regard to Pages usage. Frequently, that is the case with submissions to this community. I make no assumptions without evidence.

I chose to provide a recipe response that can be followed by all skillsets, and once performed a couple of times, the acquired experience would make the recipe unnecessary.

It would really have helped if you had mentioned that almost a week ago. This is not a late night game of Guess my Secret.

The answer would have been, you can't and even with the freehand tool, in practice, impossible. Pages' freehand tool is not a substitute for a real vector drawing App.

I only use the drawing tools for their excellent snap to and boolean features and because Apple declined to use pdf as their vector format despite making a big deal of it as part of OSX.
