From whom did you buy a drive that contained malware?

If you purchased it from a legitimate reseller, and it was not an "open box" sale, then whatever told you it had malware was likely finding a false positive.

Regardless, I would reformat any drive I buy, so that would remove any malware. All of the software bundled on them is crapware, so anything else that gets removed is no real loss.

Hello Georgia,

Why do you say that your external drive has "Adware.Mac.Genieo.LE"? Please be specific.

That looks like some warning from an antivirus program. But the problem is that Mac adware simply cannot "infect" an external drive. It doesn't work that way. It is possible you could have a Genieo installer on your external drive, but you could just delete it. Yet you say you cannot get rid of it? Why not? How are you trying to get rid of it? I suspect that once again you are referring to what some antivirus program is telling you.

To make a long story short, I doubt you have any Genieo adware on your external drive. Quite frankly, it is more likely that you have adware on your boot drive and your antivirus is unable to remove it.

Hello again georgia,

What is the name of your adware scan? Please be specific.

Unfortunately, the state of the internet security industry right now is very bad. People here on Apple Support Communities will argue for weeks about whether or not Mac users really need such anti-virus programs. But all those arguments only apply to a handful of legitimate anti-virus programs. There are many more anti-virus programs that are total scams.
