Netflix Not Working in Safari on macOS Sierra?

Hello,

I have not been able to get Netflix video to work in Safari on my iMac but Netflix works fine on Safari on my MacBook. I am running an iMac (macOS Sierra 10.12.3) and Safari (10.0.3) on both computers.

What I have already tried:

  • Yes, I have installed Silverlight.
  • Yes, I have already uninstalled and reinstalled Silverlight.
  • Yes, I have cleared the cache numerous times.
  • Yes, I have reinstalled macOS Sierra from scratch.
  • Yes, I have disabled all Safari extensions.
  • Yes, I have tried other browsers but I want to use Safari.
  • Yes, I have copied Safari App from other computers.
  • Yes, I have disabled all security software.
  • Yes, I have tried running Safari with no other Apps running.
  • Yes, I have updated all apps and macOS.

*None of this worked*

Does anyone have any other ideas?

Thank you,
Shane

I had the same problem. Then I tried the following...

1. Go to Netflix

2. Click Safari's Main Menu (next to the Apple in screen's upper left-hand), choose "Settings for this Web site," below Preferences.

3. Uncheck content blockers, for Auto-Play make sure it is enabled, and try turning off any other setting that may hinder Netflix from playing automatically.

4. Reload the page after you're finished

Netflix should start playing movies again in Safari. Doing these tweaks worked for me.

Good luck!

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer or by using the developer’s uninstall instructions. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Etrecheck – System Information

Mar 7, 2017 10:00 PM in response to Eric Root

Hello Eric,

I have opened the primary mac user account in Safe Mode and it still does not play. I tried a secondary mac user account and the Netflix played. So, back in the primary account, I disabled all the start-up and running apps but Netflix still did not play in Safari. So, it must be something to do with the user account but I cannot figure out what app is the conflict considering I have disabled every other app I use.

I get Netflix error code: N8106-107-509000 when I tried to play a video.

Still at a loss. Here is the EtreCheck report:

Try uninstalling the above using the Developer's uninstall instructions. It is 'fighting' the OS for control of the computer.

Uninstall Avast. It tends to interfere with the computer's operation while providing minimal to no benefit.

MINE IS FIXED

Ok, I've been trying to get help from both Apple and Netflix and neither can help. I think I stumbled onto the problem/solution while trying to fix another issue.

I was getting error code S7353, which Netflix kept saying that they didn't have an error code like that. I could watch Netflix through Opera.

I had tried everything that Netflix and Apple suggested including deleting database files for Netflix, removing and reinstalling Silver-light and several other things to no avail.

Today, i needed to boot into safe-mode. I thought, for the heck of it, I would try to run Netflix on Safari in safe-mode. It immediately showed that I needed to install Silver-light of which I knew I had already done so I thought "this isn't going to help" and continued to reboot my computer in regular boot up.

As soon as I launched Safari, since Netflix was the last page that I was on, Netflix came up, of course, but this time, it popped up a message asking me to TRUST SILVER-LIGHT. I clicked TRUST and it immediately started working. I can now watch Netflix on Safari.

I called Netflix and they immediately said that they are having outages on Safari. I told the girl that answered about my experience and asked her if she would let the engineers know and maybe they can start using that to see if it will help others. She said she was shooting it up to the engineers. I'm kind of doubting it being her response was so quick and she didn't seem to be listening in the first place. I wanted to put her on the spot and ask her what she was going to "shoot up to the engineers", but I decided not to. If this helps, please let me know.

Things I had done:

Deleted Netflix database files for Safari, Reinstalled Silver-Light

booted into safe-mode by shutting down the computer, holding the left shift key and turning on the computer while not letting go of the shift key. (If you are successfully in safe-mode, it will seem like your computer is glitchy as the screen will refresh or flash everytime you do something and trying to watch Netflix show - getting the "Need to Install Silver-Light" message. Shut down computer. Unplugged the power for 1 minute (Its important to actually unplug the power from the computer, not just turn off a power switch or other power supply - MUST unplug power cord from computer)

Plug power cord back in. Boot normally. Immediately launch safari and try to watch Netflix. What you are ultimately trying to do is get the computer to prompt you to trust Silver-Light. I couldn't get it to do this by removing Silver-Light and reinstalling, but then, by doing all of this, it finally prompted for me to TRUST Silver-Light and worked immediately!

Oct 29, 2017 1:02 PM in response to alcheme

This is how I got it to work. I opened my Mac in "safe mode." Then I opened Netflix. A message came up asking if I wanted to use Silverlight. An "update" came up [I had 2014 - the update was 2015]. I loaded the update and selected the button indicating I wanted to use Silverlight. Netflix then worked in either safe mode or regular mode. None of these messages came up except in safe mode.

Without going through all this, Netflix also worked when I opened in Chrome.

Oct 30, 2017 5:12 AM in response to Somps

Sad to say that after doing this, it then quit working except in "Safe" mode, so I went on line at Netflix and had a chat and learned that with the recent Apple OS 10.13 [and maybe earlier] update there is a problem for Safari which is being worked on at Netflix. If you use the "developers" link on Safari and log into another browser when on Netflix it should work until this gets fixed. I logged in to Safari, then brought up Netflix and then, in switched to Chrome and it works. Developer menu is added under Safari Preferences-Advanced Tab
