Can't set password to encrypt iphone backup

When I try to set an encryption password for an iPhone backup in iTunes, I get this error message: "The password you entered to protect your iPhone backup could not be set. Please try again."

I've tried several different passwords, including upper- and lower-case letters, and numbers. No matter what I try, I get this error.

This is on a PC running Windows 7.

Any ideas? Thanks.

A bit of Google-fu. I searched Google for the full phrase "The password you entered to protect your iPhone backup could not be set. Please try again" (adding the quotes makes it look for the phrase). I then scanned a few of the results for the one that most likely addressed your issue. I don't recall which results I got at the time, but trying just now this link (third if you ignore the sponsored results) suggests itself: http://www.rogerperkin.co.uk/apple/iphone/password-entered-protect-iphone-backup -set/ . I don't recall seeing that page before so I probably got the gist from that one or one like it using the summary in the search results without actually visiting the page.
