Why would Staples app use my Device Account Number as my credit card number, showing Device Account

I ordered a set of ink cartridges from the Staples app on my iPhone. using ApplePay. It claimed my MasterCard credit card ended with 1211, showing that way on my MBP as well. The 1211 is the ending 4 digits of my MasterCard's Device Account Number for that card on my iPhone 6 Plus, not the last 4 digits of the credit card. But now I am a little leery about some kind of bug.

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 9.2.1

Hi

When using Apple Pay, it is normal for transaction receipts to show the last few digits of the Device Account Number rather than any digits from your actual payment card.

Whenever you add a payment card to Apple Pay, that combination of card and device (eg Apple Watch, iPhone, etc) is given a unique Device Account Number, which is used instead.

Using this number instead of your actual card number forms part of Apple Pay's built-in security measures that help to protect your data.

Your actual MasterCard number is not shared with merchants when you make payments or stored on your device or on Apple's servers.
