Can third party weather app complications use my current location on the Apple Watch?

I have been trying out several third party weather apps including their complications for my Apple Watch Series 1 (watchOS 3.1.3) including Yahoo Weather, AccuWeather, WeatherPro and Weather Underground. And though the complication of the native Weather app always shows the weather at my current location, none of the complications of third party apps seem to update to my current location. It requires me to open the respective app and wait or refresh, and even then sometimes it takes longer than it should (in my opinion) until I get the current location.Location services are on and all weather apps are allowed to use my location. So what am I doing wrong? Or are third party weather apps not allowed to use my location?Any help or insight is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi

If it is not yet enabled, it may help to turn on Background App Refresh for the apps in question:

  • On your iPhone, go to: Settings > General > Background App Refresh.
  • Turn on the main setting at the top of the page.
  • Check the settings per app.

It may also help to check the following setting (in addition to the Location Services settings for each app):

On your iPhone, go to: Settings > Privacy > Location Services > check that Apple Watch Faces is set to While Using the App.

Hi Jonathan,

Thanks for your reply. However, the settings you mentioned are all set in the way you describe.

Only for one of the apps, AccuWeather, Background App Refresh was disabled on the iPhone (it was enabled for the Apple Watch). I enabled it and interestingly, now the app also updates its complication based on the current location.

But all the other apps (Yahoo Weather, Weather Underground, WeatherPro) do not; and that although all settings should be set correctly: Background App Refresh enabled globally and per app, on the iPhone and the Watch, Apple Watch Faces can ue Location Services, all apps can use Location Services…

I am really at a loss here so I decided to uninstall all apps and reinstall them to see whether this changes anything. I will report back.

However, if you have any additional ideas (or could confirm that those apps update their complications for you for example) that would be great.

Thanks again!
