kernel_task blow CPU outs

This is yet another plea for help with problems with my Kernel_task blowing out my CPU. (I tried earlier but it was never resolved).

Kernel_task regularly spins out to up to 1200% of CPU, with 300-500% being common. I've tried everything - resetting just about everything, turning off start up programs, safe restart and so on, but nothing seems to work. I have a fairly specced up machine and everything is up to date. At least 20% of my day is spent trying to nurse the computer slowly back into work mode.

It's triggered by Skype, time machine, my other backups, dropbox and outlook - but not always. Much of the time it's triggered by nothing I can see.

A trip to the Apple store in HK was not a help - the guy said it's something that they deal with over and over & it's ongoing, and the forums here are a pointer to that, with no solutions that I can see.

Any advice much appreciated. I'm at my wit's end.

Please read If kernel_task is using a large percentage of your Mac CPU - Apple Support.

A runaway kernel_task can be due to a number of factors, such as:

  • a failed or disconnected temperature sensor
  • cooling system inefficiency (an inoperative exhaust fan on Macs so equipped, possibly clogged with dust)
  • a worn out, missing, or non-Apple (user-installed) battery on portable Macs
  • similar hardware-specific causes including internal hardware additions, external USB or other connected devices

Additional suggestions that may help, in no particular order:

Determine if any one of the above resolves the runaway kernel_task. If all attempts fail have Apple evaluate your Mac: Contact Support

Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to do that read https://www.apple.com/support/backup/. To learn how to use Time Machine read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.

Regarding Activity Monitor showing occasionally excessive numbers for %CPU I have seen brief excursions to obviously absurd values such as a million and a half percent. They never persist for more than a single refresh of the Activity Monitor window. It's an obvious AM bug that I do not consider significant.

As shown in your recent screenshot %CPU values in the hundreds or thousands for more than that short period of time is significant, and needs to be addressed. Follow the above suggestions, particularly Safe Mode. That Mac is being affected by quite a few modifications, any one of which might be responsible.

Thanks Lex.

Yes some of those I do need, and use all the time, in particular, typeit4me which is vital for work. Hyperdock is also important and I've been using it for years. I've removed it to try and solve this and it made no difference.

Sadly, with all those gone, I'm still getting the cpu issues. I've added and removed pretty much all the utilities trying to fix this in recent months and concluded that there is something rogue in the library somewhere left over from an ancient piece of software. But, what?

And check this, just now:

That Mac is busy. Adobe and Google products are both notoriously inefficient on Macs, but I doubt they are the root cause of either poor performance or the runaway kernel_task.

Next time you see something like that look toward the bottom of the AM window and examine the CPU idle time:

User uploaded file

That's about where a Mac spends most of its life: waiting for you to do something. Performance becomes objectionable when it approaches (very approximately) 50%. When that happens, examine the process or processes burdening the CPU. If you cannot identify any obvious culprits a hardware fault is almost certain to be the cause — and even when there are obvious culprits, a hardware fault can still be the cause.

When the "idle" percentage reaches single digits a Mac becomes essentially unresponsive.

I suspect the Chrome issues may be simply that the tabs have been open too long and have gathered resources. I cleared the cache there.

Gramblr is posting app for Instagram (work stuff) so I can post from my laptop. I've only used it recently but am concerned that it's lodging itself.

Hello snig27,

Apparently, a super-high CPU usage for kernel_task is a side effect of some other problem. See If kernel_task is using a large percentage of your Mac CPU - Apple Support. I don't have much other information to go on. If you recently installed Gramblr, then I suggest uninstalling it. Unfortunately, Mac apps like this don't always come with uninstallers. This appears to be the case with Gramblr. Try dragging the Gramblr application to the trash. You may have to restart in Safe Mode (Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support) to do this.

After removing Gramblr, you will be left with a red error line in future EtreCheck reports. I am working on an update to EtreCheck that will clear out the remnants of apps like this.

You have a number of other suspicious entries in your diagnostic list. Gramblr might not be the ultimate problem. You will just have to take it one step at a time.

FWIW, your copy of Activity Monitor appears to be damaged. It's impossible for any process to use almost 3200% of your CPU.

Apparently not. See my previous post and the link to the Apple Support article that describes this behaviour.

FWIW, the link does not say…

a system process named kernel_task is using a large percentage of your CPU

can exceed 800% or even 100%. One of the links off the thread talks about

Any process except kernel_task that is consistently using more than 70 percent of your CPU is putting a significant load on the CPU and could be malfunctioning.

also nowhere near 3200% or even 1000%.

As I did try and explain, the % CPU comes from the total use of all processes of all cores, or in the case of a hyper-threading CPU, all threads. Either the Activity Monitor has a bug, or is implemented incorrectly, or some other running process is causing an incorrect reading.

Have you considered doing a clean install of the OS to an external disk?

I followed along whilst you removed lots of software but it is not clear how you went about this. The initial report had old apps that scattered various tools across the OS. Are you certain you uninstalled them correctly? It can be difficult to get all the relevant parts.

Installing to an external drive will indicate if the CPU, RAM are OK. Obviously you can also run Apple diagnostics to do some general checks…

How to use Apple Diagnostics on your Mac - Apple Support

Eject your internal HD when running from it so that it is not being indexed by the new OS.

If the OS is better on the external HD you can migrate your user data onto it (assuming you have a disk large enough). At that point you will see if your user account data is part of the issue. Another option is to just create a new user account & try using that for a while to see if it also has the high usage.

I note in the extensions there are old entries for ASC6x, ArcMSR, CalDigitHDPro and PromiseSTEX. Are those ok?

Yes, they are all provided with the OS as a service by Apple for 3rd party peripheral support, so those devices can be plug-and-play without having to add additional software. There should be a few others, as well. Perhaps:

  • ATTOCelerityFC8
  • ATTOExpressSASHBA2
  • ATTOExpressSASRAID2
  • HighPointOP
  • HighPointRR
  • SoftRAID

I did not read the whole etrecheck, will do that later.

A beautiful MBP !

There is a lot of software that was not recommended to have a few years back, I will check those (foo tap +tun; Zeus; Logitec; etc)

But now you should really uninstall the Samsung software and the Seagate software now !! They do nothing for you, and are counterproductive. They will probably interfere with each other even.

These apps probably are in the SystemPreferences as separate applets. Try uninstalling from there.

The names in etrecheck differ mostly from the names in the system, because that are identifiers that etrecheck displays as names to see what they belong to.

It is easy for the /Library/Extensions folder because there are only a few, it is not easy in /System/Library/Extensions folder because there are hundreds of files.

The Seagate sites do not offer how to uninstall on a mac.

For Samsung the same, but I found this: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS00045422/

it looks like the installer has a remove possibility in it.

Mar 8, 2017 4:17 AM in response to snig27

performance for the etrecheck list already good.

Another two easy steps:

1. remove all entries, except Copy/Paste and Dropbox, from

SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems

with the minus sign underneath. Then restart.

This does not uninstall anything but the apps just don't start. Do not start any of these when possible.

the other apps you don't really need to run continuously at all.

1.b. I propose to uninstall WDQuickview (in SystemPreferences)

1.c. do not run any of apps that were in the LoginItems, except of course CCC. I come back on it later.

2. In MacintoshHD->System->Library->StartupItems remove all (WiFiUtility).

On the (more important) rest I have to do some more thinking as I said above.

FWIW, I think you need to uninstall iStat menus because it seems to be giving you false readings. You have a 4 core. 8 thread i7. My understanding is, if all 8 threads were fully utilized your CPU% would read 800%, 8x100% of each thread would be being used. 1200% CPU use would be impossible.

The other thing is, you either keep a lot of tabs open at one time in Chrome or you have a large number of extensions installed. Possibly both, but 31 Chrome helpers is excessive. Try removing any extensions you don't need and try to limit the number of tabs you keep open at one time.
