Start on your existing startup disk, connect the SSD (via a connector cable to USB, or an enclosure to USB.
Start DiskUtility.
Erase the external first to Mac OS Extended (journaled) it will not do it probably,
then Partition: 1 Partition, GUID Partition Table (not MBR), Mac OS Extended (journaled).
I guess the problem was the pnY ssd. I went back and returned it and got a san disk ssd, same size for $10 more and my laptop is back to life!! I was worried I lost everything but luckily I was able to back it up a few weeks ago. Thanks for your tip
It was the pnY ssd. I went back and got a new san disk ssd. That fixed the problem and it restored everything without any issues. I guess the pny ssd just isn't compatible or the one I bought was broken. But thanks for your tip.

There have been cases posted here that the SSD would not format, nor allow a TM backup, unless it was in an external enclosure. I have no idea why that might be, but I would give it a try.

I just tested a Sandisk (Ultra II 960GB) for several months. Very good and a very modern controller inside.

i bought a pny ssd for my macbook pro mid 2012. it wont let me reformat the SSD and erase it so i can install the time machine back up from another external HD. it just gets stuck in partitioning? any fixes ?
