Finder's preview panel: Can't pinch-to-zoom twice on pictures any longer

Hi all

I used to be able to, about 4 - 5 months ago, click a photo in Finder so that its preview shows in Finder's preview panel on the right, then pinch-to-zoom on it, move the zoomed-in photo around with two fingers, and then pinch-to-zoom more, move around again, pinch-to-zoom again, etc.

Since then, I can only pinch-to-zoom once. The moment I use two fingers to move the zoomed-in photo around, I cannot use pinch-to-zoom again. I need to click another file, and then click the photo again so that its preview reloads, and only then can I pinch-to-zoom again, and only once.

I have two MacBook Pros, a Late 2013 and Early 2015, and the issue is the same on both. I've tested El Capitan and Sierra.

Please help me resolve this so that I can pinch-to-zoom, move around, and pinch-to-zoom some more, freely, once again.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS Sierra (10.12.3), null

I have updated from macOS 10.12 to 10.12.3 and have verified that the problem you have mentioned did occur.

Reproduction:

  • In finder, select an item that is in picture format (some other formats such as PDF seems not to be affected)
  • In column format
    • You could zoom in and zoom out freely, however
    • Once you have moved the picture (using two fingers) while zoomed, it could no longer zoom in or out again.
  • In quicklook format

Same situation as in column format

I would consider this to be a bug that is specific from 10.12.3 onwards (or any version after 10.12). Probably you should not update your other Macs to the latest 10.12.3 (if you haven't done so). Hope developers may fix it as soon as possible.

Another similar case was being reported in the following post:

My macbook pro md101 after updating sierra 10.12.3 cannot zoom in or zoom out on the quick look on finder.

I didn't seem to reproduce the issue on my Mac, I can freely zoom in and out no matter I have moved the picture around or not. I wonder if you encounter this change after updating to Sierra 10.12.3. As I am currently on 10.12, I will probably try to reproduce the issue after updating the OS.

The moment I use two fingers to move the zoomed-in photo around, I cannot use pinch-to-zoom again.

Also, what about pinch-to-zoom out? Is it responsive to that?

Thanks for your reply.

This began with El Capitan on my Late 2013 MacBook Pro, many months after upgrading to El Capitan.

Shortly after it started, I purchased a new Early 2015 MacBook Pro, which I updated immediately to Sierra. I had the same problem.

I also had the same problem after updating my Late 2013 MacBook Pro to Sierra.

The only Finder-affecting app that I use is Dropbox. I've tried exiting Dropbox and relaunching Finder, but this does not help.

The moment I've pinched-to-zoom in, I am able to pinch-to-zoom out, and back in, etc., so long as I haven't used two fingers to move the picture in Finder's preview panel. The moment I use two fingers to move the picture, I am unable to pinch-to-zoom in or out. Only once I have reloaded the picture into Finder's preview panel, by clicking away/a different photo/file and then back onto the photo in question, can I then zoom in and out of said photo, which I am then unable to do after using two fingers to move it.

Note that when viewing pictures in the Preview.app, I am able to zoom in and out and move around freely without any issues. It is only Finder's preview panel that is affected.

I have also tried deleting Finder's .plist, to no avail.

I will test this on a 2009 MacBook Air 11-inch and 2011 MacBook Pro 15-inch tomorrow, both running Sierra.
