Upgrading PCIe-based flash drive for MacBook Pro 2015 Retina

Hi,

I have a MacBook Pro 2015 Retina with a 1T PCIe-based flash drive. Because of my profession, it turns out I need more storage.

I found this drive but I am not sure it is compatible with my laptop:

https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-75E250B-AM/dp/B00OAJ412U/ref =sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1489049648&sr=1-1&keywords=Samsung+850+EVO

Does anyone know of other alternatives of 2TB PCIe-based flash drives (internal)?

Thanks

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS Sierra (10.12.3)

Depending on more specific identification of your MacBook Pro model

several examples of SSD replacement drives appear in OWCmacsales:

https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/ssd/owc/macbook-pro

This reputable mac-centric source of quality parts guarantees them to

work in your specific build model computer. They also have an external

case to move the original internal SSD for use as storage. Other options

may be found by another page; however link above shows most SSDs.

MY UPGRADES - enter your unit by model ID, and configuration.

Any PCIe based units would be among other solid-state-drive options.

See this PCIe for most MacBook Pro models, only 1-TB SSD:

1.0TB OWC Aura SSD flash upgrade kit for Mid-2013 & Later MacBook Air, MacBook Pro w/Retina

"Complete Kit with Drive, all required Tools, and Envoy Pro PCIe SSD Enclosure"

(for data transfer from/reuse of existing Apple factory flash drive).

The unit you've linked to is not a PCIe flash that a late model MacBook Pro

would be able to use; by identifying your model exactly, you can compare.

If your MacBook Pro is a 'Mid 2015 Retina 2.8GHz 15-inch' display, an example:

https://eshop.macsales.com/upgrades/macbook-pro-retina-15-inch-mid-2015-2.8-ghz- haswell-crystalwell/internal-drives

Check the specification details for compatibility, speed, & etc. ~ Examples

can be used elsewhere to compare value; also note they offer video install

instruction and a mail-in upgrade service. iFixit repair guides may also be

helpful to determine the level of difficulty and to see what's inside these.

Good luck & happy trails! 🙂

The dimensions of the samsung drive aren't the same as the model shown at macsales

for the computer models listed; older models that had optical drive removed could then

have a second SSD in special bracket installed instead.

As you'd mentioned 2-TB capacity PCIe SSD, previous to this discussion I'd checked OWC.

Even though SSDs don't necessarily generate the heat old design HDDs can, they do get

warm and a larger capacity SSD experiencing many read-writes may marginalize the cooling

design of the MacBook Pro. ~ Given other items inside tightly packed case, that need cooling.

You may need to inquire of other actual maker site sources or perhaps an Authorized Service

Provider, Apple Trained; one that may have upgraded these specific model MacBook Pros.

In any event...

Good luck & happy trails! 🙂
