OK, good question. I haven't done this type of thing for a few years, so I've now reviewed what I did and can offer some better clarity.
I duplicated the music I wished to trim just to make sure I preserved the original in case I failed.
I then used Quick Time Player to deal with the duplicated file and do the trimming over there. You do this in Quick Time Player using Edit > Trim ... from Quick Time Player's menu.
You then end up with a .mov file. See if you can burn that.
UPDATE: I now see Quick Time Player gave me a file formatted as an MPEG-4. So clearly things have changed over the past few years.
