The finder can't complete the operation because some data in '' cannot be read or written - Brand new hard drive

I've recently bought a new hard drive - a Seagate FireCuda 1TB SSHD ST1000LX015, specs can be seen here - http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/internal-hard-drives/hdd/firecuda/#2-5-inch-specs - and have installed it into my Macbook Pro Late 2012 15" using an optibay caddy. I was having trouble formatting the drive at first (I asked a question Re: Cannot initialize new SSHD Macbook Pro Late 2012 optibay caddy) and found that I could format the drive using GParted, as HFS+ GUID Partition Map

Now I have another problem. Whenever I try to copy files from my SSD (Journaled HFS+) I get the error 'The finder can't complete the operation because some data in '' cannot be read or written - Error -36'. I did manage to get one file to copy across, but trying the same file again a bit later resulted in the same error. I'm even getting errors when trying to re-format the drive using disk utility, even in recovery mode.

I have no idea what's wrong with the drive. I bought it as a replacement for my old drive which went dead about 2 weeks ago. I even purchased a new optibay caddy incase that was the problem. Now I'm thinking it may be an issue with the optical drive cable that connects the caddy to the motherboard.

I've tried using the dot_clean command on the folder I'm copying from, no luck.

Has anyone got any ideas?
