garage band

All i really want to use this garage band app for is to make a couple of ring tones from songs i own. I cannot cut or divide any section of these songs to fit within the 40 second requirement of iTunes. I simply cannot divide or cut the ends off of songs. The "help" menu does not have info, the cut button cuts the entire song. The app is very difficult to use in its most primary function. The app took 90 minutes to download, and does not have a trim option. The app has a poorly constructed menu of few options and fewer help menu options. The community's comments do not match my screen. I cannot move my song into the "blue" region, and there is no lower song portion select ands cut. The "bones" website links are not helpful either. if anyone can dumb down the method to cut a song, any help is appreciated.

I'm not sure, why it is not working for you. Perhaps you expect garageBAnd to be an audio Editor, but it is not. It is a tool to mix song arrangements. The original audio files will be left untouched and combined in a new project. Then you bounce the finished song as a new audio file to iTunes or to the disk.

Did you start your GarageBand project using the Ringtone template? Then it should be easy. This template will already activate the yellow cycle region to show the 40 seconds in the cycle range. Only the part of the song below this cycle range will be shared when you bounce the song to iTunes. See the screenshot below:

  • Drag the song you want to turn into a Ringtone into the track area to create a track with this song.
  • Grab the left end of the song region in the track with the mouse. The mouse pointer should turn into a bracket. Drag the left border of the region inward to trim it.
  • Now adjust the right end of the song region to trim it.
  • Use the share menu to send the ringtone to iTunes.

Did you use "Share > Ringtone to iTunes" in the Share menu in GarageBand?

If yes, show all ringtones in iTunes by setting the menu in the upper left corner to "Tones":

if the song is really not saved to iTunes, bounce it to the disk instead as a song, then change the filename extension of the bounced song to ".m4r", for example "MyGuitarRingtone.m4r".

In iTunes use the command "File > Add to Library" to import the new ringtone.

Leonie,

Thank you for your very quick response to my question. I was in the wrong area, and your tip to restart the Garageband ringtone template was very helpful. The next tip worked very well to finally be able to cut off the unwanted section of the song. Once I had completed all, the only way to get it to my iTunes was to share it as a "song", not ringtone. When shared as a ringtone, the song section would not arrive in iTunes. I really do not know where the 5 shared ringtone went. They may show up somewhere in the future! But, as a "GarageBand" song, iTunes refuses to share the song with my iPad pro or iPhone 6s as an incompatible file, so i will eat for Gartageband to someday fix its ringtone function, or still just purchase ringtones from iTunes as I have in the past. I think I am trying to do something before the technology is available, but I really appreciate your thoughtful advice. I am still just trying wrap my head around the concept of why make a ringtone if you cannot give it to your phone or iPad.

Cheeers,
