I had this error show up too. Red circle around the (R) Airpod with a red exclamation mark.

Solution:

  1. Put both earbuds in the case.
  2. Close the case lid.
  3. Turn the device's Bluetooth OFF and wait 30s.
  4. Hold the setup button down for 30s (closed case lid).
  5. Turn the device's Bluetooth ON.
  6. Open the case lid

I had one Airpod that did not connect. Its frustrating because there is little way to determine whats going wrong. The only clue I had was that when I put it in the case by itself, the case 'charging' LED did not light. Eventually, I discovered that the metal charging contact was no longer touching the Airpod when in the case, so it did not charge.
