iPad crashing - thinks battery is dead

My iPad is crashing with increasing frequency. Usually when I first awaken it, often after it has been on charge overnight and is 100% charged. Or sometimes when am in the settings app. When I go to restart it, at first it indicates that the battery is completely dead. However, then the apple logo appears and it successfully restarts, showing the battery is 100% charged.

I am running iOS 10.2.1 and when I check updates get message that software is up to date.

Try downloading the app Battery Life which is available for free from the App Store. Test the battery with it and if defective, schedule an appointment at an Apple store for possible replacement.

Also try holding down the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears and then allow the device to reboot.

If a restart does not help try a System Restore. First backup your device using iTunes. Also import your photos to your computer and copy all important data. Try restoring as New first and testing it. If it works then try restoring the backup and test it again. The backup could be corrupted. Here are the steps for a Restore:

If the above steps do not help, you may have to have it tested at an Apple store.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have tried the reboot suggestion as I read about it and I figured it couldn't hurt. Too early to tell if it solved.

I will get the app you suggested as that seems to be a great diagnostic tool

And, if those don't work will try the System Restore idea. Taking this one step at a time, but these look like they should definitely help.

Thanks again.
