Hi

If your Apple Watch is not connected to your iPhone via Bluetooth, but is within range of a compatible 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network that your iPhone has connected to before (whilst it was connected to your watch via Bluetooth), then your Apple Watch will connect automatically to that network and still offer certain features:

To test whether your watch is presently able to connect to a compatible known Wi-Fi network as a fallback:

  • When within range of that network, turn off Bluetooth on your iPhone.
  • After pausing for a short while, check the connection status of your watch:
    • When viewing the time on your watch, swipe up on the screen to open Control Centre.
    • If it states Connected and the icon is a green cloud, then your watch has connected to Wi-Fi.

Apple Watch cannot necessarily connect to any Wi-Fi network that the paired iPhone has previously used.

Requirements include:

  • The paired iPhone must have previously connected to the Wi-Fi network whilst the Apple Watch was connected to the iPhone via Bluetooth at the time.
  • The Wi-Fi network must be 802.11b/g/n 2.4GHz (Apple Watch cannot connect to 5GHz networks).
  • Apple Watch cannot connect to public networks that require logins, subscriptions or profiles.
