Actually if you do the math right, the dollar-converted prices of today are slightly below the price of June 2011:
Today: 299 pounds x 1.22 dollars/pound = 364.78 dollars
June 2011: 229 pounds x 1.613 dollars/pound = 369 dollars
It is also not surprising that these are above the 299 dollars price in the US - the prices on this side of the pond already include VAT. Pretty balanced, I suppose.
The same exercise can be done for Euros.
It turns out the dollar converted value is a bit lower now (318 vs 344 in 2011).
It is cheaper to buy it here in Portugal (299,99 euros) vs UK (299,99 pounds), even as the pound is currently about 1.14 euros, and VAT is much higher in Portugal than in the UK.
