CarPlay 2016 Honda Civic "No Device Connected"

2016 Honda Civic Touring edition with the Display Audio infotainment system. Start car, connect iPhone, and CarPlay is in use get a "No Device Connected" message about 2 minutes after. Requires unplugging and re-plugging iPhone to resolve. It's not iPhone or cables - on my second iPhone, both had same problems. Tried multiple Apple genuine lightning cables. The infotainment was updated to latest version of software - had the problem before and after software update from Honda. Honda's field engineer believes it's an Apple iOS problem. Anyone else have this problem? Any word from Apple whether iOS 10.3 will resolve issue? Very frustrating!

iPhone 7 Plus, iOS 10.2.1

I have a 2016 Honda Civic Touring edition and have had these problems from the beginning. I verified that it was in some way related to a large music library and iCloud music library being turned on. I recently took my 2016 Honda Civic Touring in and had the latest update applied to the infotainment system. They said service bulletin 17-048 replaced TSB 16-022 with a newer update. I believe this update was released in July 2017. They ran an update and now my software version is 1.F190.25. It’s been 2 weeks and I’ve no longer had any of the issue I was having with my backup camera, carplay, etc. My experience is that honda will not update your system unless you express very specific issues noted in the TSB. This TSB notes that it is mainly to address issues with the system beeping constantly and returning to the home screen and other screen issues. However, It clearly fixes a number of other issues.

Interesting!

Thanks for the information. I am going to look into this myself soon. Even more interesting is that my Honda dealer claims that it checks every time you bring your car in if any updates like this are available but perhaps that is not accurate.

My experience is that Honda will check for recalls but they are only allowed to perform work on a TSB that is not a recall if you specifically mention the issues covered in the TSB. and even then I've had issues with them performing the work noted. I have been in the habit of verifying their work by checking things myself. Once they charged Honda for actually replacing my unit but they never actually replaced it. you can always check the version of the software yourself. Here is a PDF of the original TSB that has instructions on how the process is done and how to check the version. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&v ed=0ahUKEwi82cqI2NLXAhXLRN8KHWLeCyUQFgg0…

Yeah.. I too see this issue, but I am just using pandora. So I am not even sure why apple music would even come into play for me as I am not even loading in the app. The crazy part for me is that it will continue to play the music, but it shows the dreaded "No Device Connected" bar at the bottom of the screen. The phone still says it is connected to car play. The car however does not. I have talked to Honda as well and they say that they want me to wait until iOS 11. The weird part is that I have used my same phone and cable in multiple cars with no issues. Chevy, Toyota, Nissan, and Ford. The idea that the new version will address the issue is a little disturbing. Especially since when 11.0.1 it may creep back in.

From my experience, it does not matter if you run / launch the Music app or not..

I've have problems if I just loaded the Audiobooks or Podcast apps. It (the Music app) and/or iOS must do something in the background if Apple Music is enabled in Settings.

I have been using the public beta of iOS 11 - things have improved when using CarPlay in my '16 Civic. It isn't perfect but it is better.

I installed iOS 11 today. If anything it's worse. During one 15 minute drive home from work I got the "no device connected" message 4 times. Of course - the audio works just fine so clearly a device IS connected. But the screen is unusable. This is nonsense - and is a result of Honda trying to pass off a sub-par tablet, that probably doesn't have an adequate amount of operating memory for people with decent sized music libraries.

I have mostly has the reverse experience since upgrading to iOS 11 (and the mouth prior using the iOS 11 Public Beta) in my 2016 Civic Touring

Although I have to caveat this with the fact that I have reduced my Apple Music library from 37000+ songs down to its current size of 16, 706 songs.

With that said, I rarely get a "No Device Connected" message since upgrading to iOS 11. It still happens but with much less frequency than it used to with iOS 10. In addition, I don't need to do any special "stupid pet tricks" to get it to work. For example, on a recent trip to and from LA I had zero problems with CarPlay.

However, I feel things could be even better if we ever get another firmware update from Honda.

Many others, me included with my 2016 Touring, have run into this. And like you I have tried all kinds of things to resolve it with little to no luck

If it is the same problem, it stems from using Apple Music and having a large music library. I have 36000+ songs in my library.

If you disable Apple Music the problem should go away. Not a good workaround, especially if you want to listen to your music. In addition, when I use my wife's iPhone, who has Apple Music enabled but a much smaller library than myself it also works great.

I have also had mixed results if I turn my iPhone 6+ completely off and back on and then connected it to my car.

I have heard from others on other threads this is a Honda issue and the fix for this ultimately needs to come from them but I don't know if this is 100% true or not. I can vouch that the public beta of 10.3 does not seem to make any difference.

And yes, very frustrating. I am hopeful somehow this gets resolved soon - but it has been going on a LONG time.

Hi ilex1. Thanks for posting on the discussion forum. I see based on your information that you are using iOS 10.2.1 on your iPhone 7 (which is stated under your question). iOS 10 has been "buggy" which may cause your car not to recognize your phone, or Visa Versa. Another thing is that Honda is a little newer in Apple Car Play, and also, the 2016 Civic has had many issues on Apple Car Play, espically when your music library has a lot of songs on your song list. I have a couple solutions for you. #1: You can go through your music library and get rid of your least favorite songs (unless you like all of them)#2: You can wait for Honda to recall or update their software, or #3: You can wait it out until a less "buggy" version of iOS 10 comes out. Maybe you can listen to FM/AM radio.
