Is there any way to rename a volume of a partitioned hard drive?

Hello all -

I have an external hard drive with 8 volumes (partitions). Is there any way to rename one or more partitions (volumes) without having to erase and re-partition the entire drive?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts -

Finder -> Go -> Go to Folder -> /Volumes

Click on the mounted partition so that highlights the volume name

Press <return>

Rename name the partition just like you would any file or folder name

Press <return> to fix the name in place

-OR- press <esc> to cancel the rename

If your partition is mounted on the Desktop, you can just do the rename there, no need to go to the /Volumes folder.

Hi Bob -

Thanks for your reply.

When I do Finder -> Go -> Go to Folder -> /Volumes, I do get a listing of MacintoshHD's folders plus the Volumes folder, but with "Volumes" and its folder icon grayed out. When I then click that Volumes folder, I get a listing of aliases

to the volumes on my external disk (plus the folder directly to Macintosh HD). Then clicking on the alias to the name I want to change lists all the folders in that volume; but clicking its name the second time (or more) does not give me the selection box to change its name. Am I missing something? Or is there some setting (in Disk Utility or somewhere else) that I can change? - or that I should have changed when partitioning the disk using Disk Utility?

The only Alias in /Volumes should be the boot disk. All the others should be volume names that you can rename.

If you want to change the boot volume then you need to set your Finder -> Preferences -> General -> Show these items on the desktop -> [X] Hard disks

Then rename the boot volume from the desktop. While this option is set, all your mounted partitions should be displayed on the desktop, and you can rename any of them from their.

After you have renamed them, you can turn off the Finder preference if you do not want them displayed on your desktop.
