Can I engrave my name on my new MacBook Pro?

Hi,

I have a new macbook pro and am planning to take it with me on a vacation in May. I am worried about theft. Can I engrave my name on it without damaging it? I don't care if it is messy, but I would not want to damage it so that it would not work. Just wondering.....

Hi,

Unless you press extremely extremely extremely hard, you shouldn't press hard enough to bend the case into the internal components. I would be worried if it would in any way void the hardware warranty. I would check with Apple Support and try to get something in writing, or at least a case ID: https://support.apple.com/contact

And if you're really worried about someone getting access to your data if it is stolen, enable FileVault: Use FileVault to encrypt the startup disk on your Mac - Apple Support

and a Firmware Password: Use a firmware password on your Mac - Apple Support

In my early career years I worked in a crime lab and we saw a lot of stolen merchandise come through with the serial number and/or the owner's name scratched off. It was a clue that the item was stolen but no non-destructive marking method available to the end user is restorable to legibility even under lab conditions.

In addition to the steps tjk offers, I would add Cloud-based file backups. Very few stolen computers are recovered and even fewer in working condition so, with a strong off-site backup, at least your data is safe.
