incompatible raw files with Canon EOS 5D Mark IV

I have been using Aperture for a while and always afraid of when will it stop working... I think this is finally the day, as I got a new Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and Aperture won't recognize its raw files. It does recognize the raw files from the older Mark III and even from the almost contemporary EOS 1D Mark II. Has anyone seen this? Are there any fixes for it to read the Raw files? (of course, I know it would read other processed formats). Thanks.

I really doubt that Aperture has stopped recognising raw files, as it uses the Mac OS for raw files. Can you open the raw file by going CTL click and open with Preview? If not then you need to use App Store to do updates under the Apple menu at top left. bob

However, the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV is such a high-profile camera that it is reasonable to expect that its raw format will probably be in the next macOS Digital RAW Camera Compatibility Update. But we won't know for sure until the next update appears.

The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV is already supported systemwide on Sierra since early February. Photos for Mac can open and develope the RAW files. But Aperture cannot use the RAW support that came with macOS 10.12.2, only the part relating to the older cameras.

It is suspicious, that the most recent RAW Support update for macOS, that is not working with Aperture, is the one that introduced RAW support for the mobile devices with iOS 10.2. Something must have changed how macOS Sierra handles RAW support, but Aperture has not been updated to cope with these changes.

Look at the panel "Aperture > About Aperture".

You will see the version number of the RAW support Aperture is using.

This is installed at /System/Library/CoreServices/RawCameraSupport.bundle/

and showing a date of 21.05.16, 06:24, version 7020.

The RAW support in the System Library that Aperture is using, has not been updated since May 2016.

The camera RAW 7020 has been installed on my Mac with the latest Sierra upgrade to 10.12.3. But it does not help with Aperture. Aperture can still not use the newest RAW support that came already with macOS 10.12.2.

All Canon EOS M5 files that should have been supported by that update are still showing "Unsupported Image Format".

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV is supported as part of the system since macOS 10.12.2 Sierra, as shown here, and the most recent applications installed by Sierra, like Photos for Mac can use it.

But as far as I can tell Aperture is not able to use the RAW support for the new cameras released with macOS 10.12.2, only the earlier released RAW support.

There have been posts, that Aperture does not recognize the RAW files for several of the cameras on this list:

See for example this discussion: Re: Re: Aperture and Fuji XT2 RAW files.

When I check the installed RawCamera.bundle, that Aperture is using, in the Terminal, the newest Canon is not listed in this bundle, only the MarkII and III.

I don't have 7020 Camera Raw Support. I have 7010. There is is no update I can see so where did you get 7020?

What I can say is that all apps appear to be using the same raw.

Aperture is using

/System/Library/CoreServices/RawCameraSupport.bundle/Contents/Resources/PlugIns. zip

Phocus is using

/System/Library/CoreServices/RawCameraSupport.bundle/Contents/Resources/PlugIns. zip

Preview is using

/System/Library/CoreServices/RawCameraSupport.bundle/Contents/Resources/PlugIns. zip

If you check the raw support list the 5DMk4 is not there yet.

But it is. The list is not fully sorted. Scroll down all the way to the bottom of the list - you'll see the latest RAW update added by macOS Sierra 10.12.2 in December 2016.

What I can say is that all apps appear to be using the same raw.

The only difference is, that Photos can process the RAW of all cameras added by the last macOS Sierra RAW support, but that Aperture can't.

It is clearly on the list and Photos can develope the RAW.

I can only conclude that the RAW support installed by Sierra 10.12.2 is in a different format from the RAW support that Aperture can use.

Aperture 3.6 is more than a year old and has been released for OS X 10.10.3.

Apple used to update this list with cameras supported by Aperture, but it is no longer updated:

Support for digital camera raw files is not controlled by Aperture, it is controlled by the system-wide raw compatibility support in macOS which provides raw support to Apple Aperture and Apple Photos. If your camera's raw format is not yet supported, this is not because of Aperture, it's because of macOS. Apple eventually adds most raw camera formats to macOS, but you will have to wait until Apple delivers a Digital RAW Camera Compatibility Update with new cameras added. This update will turn up in the App Store like other system updates.

But there is not a regular schedule as to when the Digital RAW Camera Compatibility Update comes out, and furthermore, there is never a guarantee as to whether a particular camera raw format is going to be supported.

However, the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV is such a high-profile camera that it is reasonable to expect that its raw format will probably be in the next macOS Digital RAW Camera Compatibility Update. But we won't know for sure until the next update appears.
