Why is the iCloud Drive taking up so much space on my Macbook?

I have a 2015 12inch macbook with 250GB of storage and iCloud Drive takes up 70GB of this, why does iCloud take up so much, isn't it supposed to put my documents on the cloud and delete them from my mac to free up more storage space? Attached is a picture showing this.User uploaded file

No.

That's not what iCloud Drive does. It may help with space, but that is not its primary purpose.
