iMessage read receipts not showing up correctly

I've noticed that iMessage read receipts are not showing up correctly. iMessage will show a message was read, but after a few minutes the message will revert to delivered, even after the individual has replied. How can I fix this?

iPhone 6, iOS 10.2.1

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding that the "Read" receipt reverts to "Delivered" after a few minutes in Messages. I have a couple of steps I'd like you to try.

First, force close the Messages and test the issue again. This can help issues with a specific app. Use the steps in the link below:

If the issue persists, restart your iPhone. This can resolve many unexpected behaviors.
