HI,

I have a 12 month old iMac (inc AppleCare) The problems seem to be ever changing, one problem will ease off and then a brand new one will crop up, daily, the problems listed above are constant, the Mac has been in to an apple repair centre twice (left for 2 weeks) with no errors found - even though I have videos, SS, crash reports etc, nothing is getting fixed.

* Safe mode - the computer has huge lag in safe mode - SOMETIMES.

** New user did work, the computer was vastly improved and even display colours seemed clearer, good white point etc - this lasted maybe a day then back to normal problems.

Having owned Apple Macs for nearly 30 years, in a publishing environment, constant daily use as an advanced user I am stuck! 30 years, 20 Macs and can’t remember ever having an issue for 29 years, until this machine, I spend 30% of my time trying to fix and work with it.

Latest Problems:

I have performed a complete clean install, only installed adobe cc 17 and files required to work, this problem is new:

Open - Finder - Applications - often this will close the finder window and all desktop icons / folders will disappear and come back, you can look at all other folders in finder apart from applications, then 10 mins later its fine.

As above - when viewing applications folder, ‘opened recently view' app icons will swap around - i.e. word will show excel icon, utilities folder will show InDesign icon.

New today, when I save an image or file from an open app to desktop it doesn’t show, but if I then go to the finder window - all files and click on the saved doc or picture it will suddenly appear on desktop, I then restarted to see if that helped, it has so far but when going to save, the auto saved folder has changed from desktop to a folder called D21D4194-9c7c-409C-B115-5410676A1EEEE?

Most Etrechecks show an excellent performance rating of approx 1:30.

Funnily enough (well, not really) a new problem for the first time whilst opening the etrecheck box to grab txt, as the window opened it was completely 'red', once fully opened it was fine, also the diagnostics information is missing multiple crashes.

Sorry for the extensive post, just wondering if any one has any ideas at all….

Entrecheck Encl ( I backup now using Drive, but run this manually, problem was there before using any backup software).

Thanks for your reply BDAqua, can I just confirm how much information you want me to include from each error reported on etrecheck, from the console?

Something a little strange, when I opened the console it displayed the request "User not responded to pairing request on iPhone' I then got a message on my iPhone? see below.

Also I had a system / info look at one of the folders which is named 'Yesterday' but is really the 'Activity Monitor' - I don't know if this is normal but you will see under sharing 'Everyone' which has a custom privilege'

Maybe I'm getting paranoid, or just fed up 🙂 thanks for your reply and help, I will list the logs you request.

Thanks

Hi BDAqua,

I haven't got a clue what I'm looking for to be honest, If I switch between a few folders in Finder it crashes and the desktop (including desktop folders) disappear and refresh, I have just made it happen at 7.10pm and have the error log, would the top section show anything?

I can screen grab and reduce size to100k , it would be about 6 though to get all info, probably better with the text, he is the top from the 7.10pm crash:

Hi BDAqua,

I have created new admin accounts before and reinstalled with a clean system many times before, but I wanted to give correct feed back to your helpful advice.

I created a new admin account, as before the system runs faster, there are no problems with the icons and during a 3 hour or so period the finder didn't crash, I copied files across and things seem to run ok, as I copy files and folders from my backup the Mac does slow up a little and get choppy / laggy when moving folder windows, I still have over 80 % of the HD available.

I didn't set up mail etc.

I ran etrecheck a few times and it looks like I have got the older style of error from last year, I haven't seen this for a while, I have included a screen shot, I can confirm these started at at 8.10pm and went on every few seconds till about 9.15 then stopped, and as you can see they started again just before 11pm and have kept going till 11.16pm

I am also surprised at the 20.38 gb in cached files, that doesn't seem right for a brand new user, unless its got something to do with indexing.

Hi BDAqua,

Glad you mentioned that, I have heard this as well but haven't removed Spotify, I will do this now and remove cache .plist files for a week's test, you will see from the SS below the etrereport is never the same with cache and other errors, I have included a SS of the cache folder and also a OmniDisk SS which now shows caches at only 1.14gb.

I notice the private folder which contains a 20gb sleepimage (ram image for sleepmode) I am not in need of freeing up space, but I understand this can be deleted.

Anything else jump out at all?

Again I appreciate your time with this matter, unless you see something, I think it's worth me seeing if all these changes really do make a difference over the next few day's.

Oh well, thing's seemed ok for a day, but today the slowness is back with shutdown screen error's and something new!

Serves me right for putting together a list of things I did to fix my problems above 🙂.

1) I am getting a graphics glitch on almost every startup on the apple logo (see picture 1) I have obviously reset everything as normal, previously once the startup bar under the apple logo is complete, it has always switched immediately to login options, now the logo and bar disappear and I get a black screen for maybe 20 secs before I get login options. NEW

2) I only used to get multi coloured screens glitches maybe once a week, I am getting them 95% of the time on shutdown now (see pictures).

3) In the past the machine would shutdown within a few seconds of the desktop closing, I can now still see the backlight on for up to 90 seconds after shutdown. NEW

I have removed Spotify and manually worked through all library's and caches to ensure its gone.

I must be a CLOWN.

Seriously! I cant' remember having any other product (let alone a £2,000 computer) that couldn't be returned with a refund or replacement when faulty...

I have only ever wanted to work on an Apple Mac, for 20 years I have paid premium prices for a premium product, I am seriously unable to work on this Mac, another day wasted trying to sort out different problems to the day before.

I'm stuck in a loop, Apple won't replace (in warranty with Apple care) they have replaced the logic board one, had it for repair twice both over a week, I replaced the ram with crucial and increased to 32GB, I have spent hours and hours both on the phone and with remote support, sent videos, SS reports and still in the same place nearly a year down the road.

I have listed everything at the start of this thread to try and fix these problems, this is now a daily routine, I would have to say over 50% of the time I'm trying to fix this thing, if not more!

I have removed Spotify and Line and tried disabling the idrive backup.

Today I haven't had the screen graphics glitch on shutdown, but I have noticed a file which is a corrupt copy of another word docx, see image.

Also today, Safari isn't loading some HTML5 pages of my online magazine, the magazine is fine on iPad, so I clicked on Firefox to see if it's a Safari problem, and got the message 'Profile Missing' Firefox profile missing or inaccessible - so I deleted the Firefox app, restarted, downloaded and installed again and still got the same message.

Just to confuse things, you will see in pic one, the top word file wasn't opening and the title looks corrupt, I renamed it PP vs PP.docx which you will see below, however it didn't rename the file, it created a new one which was also corrupt.

You will see the actual original file PA vs PP copy.docx which is fine, I am not sure where the '~$ vs' came from, maybe when word crashed in the past?.

Idea's, Comment's or Ridicule all welcome 🙂

Anyway you could post the full text of that etrecheck report?

Might be interesting to see one of those node crashes also.

On the cached files...

  • Open a Finder window and select “Go to Folder” in the Go menu.
  • Type in ~/Library/
  • proceed

When that Finder window opens, highlight the Caches folder & do a Get info on it, what size is that folder?

I have the same question in part. I am seeing two of the symptoms you describe on an iMac from the same manufacturing time period.

"Occasional complete full screen artifacts when closing" Your photo of the full screen artifacts is much the same as seen here. Here on this iMac this occurred only after re-imaging the FusionDrive and migration to MacOS Sierra last week.

"Occasional black / red or green windows when watching video." This is new but not frequent in the last few weeks. I do not yet know if this applies to all video content.

I have also noted an occasional error code but nothing consistent.

Fyi, I only realised after posting the above that my iPhone was plugged into the Mac charging, which is why the Mac was probably trying to pair.

Other things that could have an impact on matters:

- I have a 2011 21" iMac also connected to the same network but on a different wifi frequency.

- We have a professional Adobe cc license which allows two Macs - also we have muliti license MS office.

- We have iPads, iPhone and printers connected by wifi

- Our iMacs are quite a distance from the router (15 metres) but we have full signal and never had WIFI issues like others have.

Thanks

I am also surprised at the 20.38 gb in cached files, that doesn't seem right for a brand new user...

You may very well be onto something there, just created a new user in 10.10.5, Caches is only 4 MB!

We may get clues to the whole shmeer by using OmniDiskSweeper is likely the easiest/best, and is now free...

Get that, run it, it will eventually show the size of all folders, and seeing the biggest folder(s) in ~/Library/Caches might be the ticket we need. 🙂

UPDATE:

Last night I worked my way through this forum and other resources making notes of every fix I thought could correct my iMac errors, I have made these changes at separate times since owning this iMac but never combined them all at once.

Since doing this (I don't really want to say this 🙂), I have had no crashes, no problems with finder and the general system seems faster, I have been down this road many times, only to find problems back within a few days though, I am also seeing 'scheduled wakeups hung' messages, however I have not got the iMac set for scheduled sleeps.

I did the following from safe mode:

- I reselected the startup disk from system preferences and restarted.

- Used manage HD space (Menu - About This Mac) to delete everything I wasn't going to need or use, i.e. MS outlook, powerpoint and old files I have backed up.

- I went through all system preference settings (from menu) changing background colours, general settings, privacy, displays, I changed them and then reselected the settings I wanted for some settings.

- I set spotlight to reindex drive.

- I read that using your own image as wallpaper can cause a problem, I therefore changed my wallpaper to an apple factory image.

- I went through accessibility settings and restored all original factory settings, I have left these to factory.

- I manually went through all library folders for system and users and removed .plists that were still there for deleted apps, there were also files here from software I thought had been completely removed - these were deleted.

- I also deleted the finder.plist and sidebar.finder plist files, there are posts on this forum of where to find them.

- Before shutdown I deleted the second test user admin account, removing all files (not saving desktop / home).

- Then I shutdown and restarted resetting the SMC, once started I cleared the cache manually for each app (command/option/control whilst opening).

- I then shutdown and restarted clearing pram etc.

I'm sure I've missed other bits, basically I restored most of the factory settings, deleted everything I wouldn't use and crossed my fingers.

The finder problems have been sorted, the search and finder windows are much quicker.

A long post I know, but wanted to share just in case it helps anyone, as I read today on another thread, I really do spend 30% of my time trying to nurse this iMac through the day.

Finally and most importantly, I have two backups of my system, the above has made the general feel of the iMac a lot quicker, it has also fixed (currently) the finder problem, however, with 4 blank pages open in in-design the movement is still extremely laggy and that's with all suggested fixes for in-design in place (preview fonts etc).

Thanks
