map apps not showing correct speed

Travel apps that report my car's speed show roughly half the actual speed. I've restarted, reset network settings, switched the compass on and off with no luck. Regardless the location on the maps are correct. Is there a way to manually reset the the gyro? If not, does this sound like a permanent issue with the phone?
