Is it possible to save and archive ( i)messages in iOS 10.2?

You're welcome. I just checked and saw that Phoneview has a try-before-you-buy demo, and I'd expect many of these programs will offer that. So you can check them out before purchasing (as well as reviews in places like Macworld, PCMag, wired, etc).

How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch -- Backing up your iPhone will save the messages you want to store.
Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup -- If you have a need to retrieve those messages, you can restore the backup but the information on your phone will revert to the date of that backup.

There are third party programs that can save your SMS texts and iMesages as text files. I've never used them but you can find them with a google search. I have seen such tools for both OS X computers and Windows (Phoneview is one for OS X - I've never used it but there are reviews in MacWorld and other tech sites).
