Time Capsule UBee Modem

I have been using Time Capsule with 2 Aiport Express - one to extend my network upstairs and the other to use as remote station for whole house audio.

Yesterday, I "upgraded" my Time Warner Internet to Spectrum - offering 100MB service. The good news - I'm getting 115MB on downloads.

The bad news - they "suggested" I use the wireless network "included" with the plan. I was hesitant, but after they connected the UBEE Modem, I was amazed at the speeds. However, if they plugged the Time Capsule and one of the Airport Express into the UBEE modem, everything shut down. I've been able to keep the 2 AEs working, as well as the 2 Apple TVs on wireless...until now. The AEs are intermittently shutting down. I have still have WiFi, but I don't have the whole house audio...and I also don't have my Time Capsule backup. I've read that it's "possible" to use Time Capsule on wireless, but...with everything else being so goosey, I'm not willing to go there yet.
Obviously, I want to keep the incredible download speeds, but I'd also like to have everything else back up and running. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Anytime you make major changes to the network as you have done, you must reset the Airports (including the TC) to factory and redo the configuration.

If your previous modem was pure modem and now you have a wireless gateway, the setup of the TC will be entirely wrong.

No files are lost doing a factory reset and it is necessary in this case.

Factory reset universal

Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.

N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.

Setup the TC again.

Then redo the setup from the computer you want to use for TM using Airport Utility.

1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.

eg TCgen5 for basestation and TCwifi wireless name.

If the wireless is still a problem set wireless names like TC24ghz and set the 5ghz to different name.. eg.TC5ghz

2. Use all passwords that also comply with 1. but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.

**3. If the TC is main router you can skip this point. This is only an issue when the TC is bridged.

Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC.

Ignore this point if you don't understand it .. post back if you have drop out issues.

4. Make sure IPv6 is set correctly in the computer. ie link-local only for ethernet and/or wireless depending on which you use. Auto is not good enough.

You can have issues with the backup to the TC when the Mac is connected to a different router.. but to get to that point start with the TC.. ignore the express for the moment and try the setup.

If you run into issues please post screenshots of how you have the TC setup from your airport utility.

First of all, the UBEE Modem is not just a modem......it is a modem/router, also called a gateway device. This type of device combines a separate modem and separate wireless router into one package.

However, if they plugged the Time Capsule and one of the Airport Express into the UBEE modem, everything shut down

Did "they" explain to you that the Apple devices.....Time Capsule and other AirPorts.....were still programmed with the settings to connect to your old "modem"?

And, did "they" go on to explain that if you want them to connect to the "new" modem, that you will need to reset all of the Apple devices back to factory default settings and then set them up again.....so that the Apple devices will pick up the new settings from the "new" modem?

Obviously, I want to keep the incredible download speeds, but I'd also like to have everything else back up and running. Any suggestions?

Are you willing to start all over from scratch and set up each of the Apple devices one by one?

Bob and LaPastenague,

Thank you so much for your timely and patient replies. I have a feeling that both answers are relevant.

Having been without Internet for two days, I need to take a collective breath and catch up on some things.

I'll also need a time when I can go at this when my "downtime" is not so critical.

To respond to some items in both responses:

1. Currently, the TC is not connected. I have green lights on everything else (all wirelessly). I'm good with that...my wife has internet connectivity and we both can enjoy Apple TV.

2. I'm embarrassed to say that I don't know if the previous modem was pure modem or not. I've used Apple WiFi for so long, I simply "assumed" they were pure modem. My guess is it was as the setup was obviously wrong.

3. Factory reset...as I mentioned, as soon as the TC is plugged into an Ethernet port, the UBee shuts down. Continue with the reset as is?

4. Good advice on passwords.

1a. Yes, I realized the UBee was a gateway device. But, no...they did not explain that Apple devices were still programmed with old settings.

2a. Yes, I'm willing to start all over from scratch.

It may not be tomorrow or the next day, but I'll keep you both posted.

Thanks again! Cheers!

We fully understand it will take a few days to get a chance to work on it.. we hang out and one of us can answer any questions that arise.

Just to answer this.

3. Factory reset...as I mentioned, as soon as the TC is plugged into an Ethernet port, the UBee shuts down. Continue with the reset as is?

Reset following the instructions I gave with no connection to the main router. Since the reset is based purely on a powered TC (express are the same btw).. you can power it up with no connections at all. Do it manually by pressing the reset before power on for factory reset.. after power on for hardware reset (slightly different results.. I prefer full factory).

Once it is reset you can then plug WAN port on the TC to LAN port on the ubee.. make sure it is not ewan or WAN port as modem routers nowadays can have multiple ports.. it should be a standard LAN port marked 1, 2, 3 or 4.

Then you can proceed to do the setup.. Once completed you can do the setup of each express in turn.

It is honestly not a long process.. Follow the instructions.. you should take less than 30min even if you have never done it before. If you run into trouble it will be easy to turn off the TC and express and just keep everything as is.. so nothing is needed which alters your working setup.

Post screenshots of configurations if they don't work.. we can glean a lot of info from a screenshot.. and it is easier to follow than long descriptions.
