Multiple sync issues with iTunes 12.5.5.5

I have upgraded iTunes to 12.5.5.5 on Windows 10 Pro (fully updated) and am finding the following issues when syncing with iTunes across ALL of my devices that are running iOS 10.2.1:

  • Throwing an error about Google safebrowsing data upon connection
  • Not syncing music, television shows, or movies either way (to or from device). At the moment, I have several new albums of music that I can't get onto my devices!
  • Some music, TV, and movies are shown as greyed out - uneditable - in the "On my device" listing, although the ones that were on the device prior to the iTunes update are still on the device and accessible.
  • Some music that is showing greyed out and unavailable is listed right below what looks like an available version of the same song (same artist and song length), but the name of the one that is available is just a long number
  • Devices are not syncing apps at all, or are only partially syncing - either hanging partway through, or starting and abruptly finishing right after the backup, without even going through the other steps
  • The bar at the bottom of the device page in iTunes no longer shows the space taken up by photos, music, videos, documents, etc. It is all just one big yellow "other". Occasionally, one or two of the categories will show correctly, but the remainder is always "other".
  • iTunes appears to be idle, but won't shut down as is taking up 30+% of my CPU. Have to force quit via Task Manager.

I've tried restarting devices, restarting iTunes, and restarting my computer, to no avail. I've cleared caches, removed and reinstalled the Google apps. Nothing is working. It's literally taking hours to get just the apps on the seven devices in this household updated. Clearly, something is wrong on Apple's end, and I want to know either when it will be fixed or what the workaround is.

This first issue appears to be connected to an outdated SSL certificate on one of Google's mirror servers. You should be able to acknowledge the warning and continue syncing when it crops up.

Two though six should respond to this approach:

Try the following all-purpose steps for dealing with erratic device or sync behaviour. They assume that all of the content you want on the device is in your library ready for restoring. If it isn't see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device first. I would also recommend you copy everything out of the camera roll if you haven't already.

  1. Backup device to iTunes. (How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support)
  2. Restore as a new device. (Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support)
  3. Restore the backup you made earlier. (Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup - Apple Support)

Use an encrypted backup if you want to preserve passwords, Wi-Fi settings, web history and health data where appropriate. I also suggest syncing with a selection of playlists (unless you're using iCloud Music Library) rather than manually adding content as, if nothing else, the process above is easier to do if you ever have to go through it again.

Issue seven should respond to this approach, which you should probably do first:

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. When reinstalling right-click the downloaded setup file and use Run as administrator.

Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, or want to revert to an older version if the current one won't work properly for you at the moment.

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.
