Horrible Hissing Noises - iPod Touch 5

About 10 minutes ago I went to power up my iPod Touch 5th generation for some music, and when I got some messages i didn't hear any notification sounds. So I turned up my notification sound and I started to reply. But when it didn't sound again, I knew something was up so I went to music and played a random song and suddenly a horrific hissing/static sound erupted out of the speaker and I was frightened because the noise that came out of the speakers were absolutely terrifying. I also noticed whenever I typed the hissing would come back and get louder and louder. I tried searching up the problem on a different device but the only fixes were for iPhones, not iPods. I eventually fixed it by plugging in my headphones and playing music then unplugging the headphones. It works fine now but there is a very slight difference in the sound quality that I can't exactly place. If anyone knows what this problem is please help me. I'm worried I'll have to bring it into the Apple Store and pay hefty fees for repairing. I also won't touch the iPod until I find a fix. Thanks for helping!

It sounds like the device may have not fully exited "headphone mode" the last time a headset was connected. Ultimately if a third-party headset is used or if a headset is frequently connected and disconnected the port will eventually start to be impacted.

Since the external speaker has returned functionality for the most part I would suggest following the steps [even if already performed previously, just to see if revisiting might further address the persisting clarity issue] within this support article from Apple which is relative to all iOS devices.
