Hi, So basically I'm trying to clear up some space to update my mac and just realized that Macintosh HD is taking up a whole bunch of space, I'm just wondering if it's safe to delete it to clear up some space.

No. You do not want to do that. Mac HD holds the contents of your Mac, operating system as well as your documents, photos, etc.

Deleting it won't help; instead, back up your data, drag the slider below it as far down as it will go, click Apply, and restart from it. If desired, you can then move the data from 4 onto it, delete that, and finish enlarging it.

No, it is not safe to delete the entire content and disk structure of your iMac, but you will find that your iMac won't let you do that even if you try.
