DVD or CD Sharing...option does not exist

so I am running sierra OS and i'm trying to install my older Final Cut Pro from a windows laptop to my macbook pro via DVD or CD Sharing...but option does not exist on my macbook pro. Remote share pops up but nothing shows in its location. Why doesn't my sharing folder show DVD or CD sharing option?

I've tried downloading from apple.com the dvd and cd sharing driver but my mac tells me it's already installed but I can't find the option anywhere. I also tried adding a couple lines of code that macrumors.com suggested into tricking my macbook pro into thinking it was a macbook air which automatically knows to use DVD or CD sharing feature. Please help...I've been trying to figure this out and like everything else in my life i'm getting the true murphy's law test with my mac :/

FWIW, according to the link I posted…

Sharing discs

If your Mac doesn't have a built-in optical drive and you need to use a CD or DVD, you can connect an external drive like the Apple USB SuperDrive. You can also share discs from the optical drive of another Mac, or from a Windows computer that has DVD or CD Sharing Setup installed. DVD or CD sharing allows you to access documents stored on these discs, and allows you to install some software.

DVD or CD sharing isn't designed for some kinds of optical media. Connect a compatible optical drive directly to your Mac if you need to use one of these discs:

  • Audio CDs
  • Blu-ray or DVD movies
  • Copy protected discs (such as some game discs)
  • Recordable CDs or DVDs that you want to burn or erase
  • Microsoft Windows installation discs

My guess is the FCP disc is one of the discs you need to use a Mac compatible drive directly connected your Mac.

Thanks for pointing that out.

Well, if they are install disks and depending on the version/age, it will not work as the installer is Power PC based and simply will not run on newer Macs. The app may (as it is usually universal) - I have an old version of Final Cut Express and have gone through that process.

The only way it will work is to avoid the installer and find ALL the files (and it's a page long list) in an older installed version and copy them over - one by one. I have done it and it worked, but mine is a slightly different app and version, and without being able to grab the installed files, there is no way.

There is the 'remote disc' present but it doesn't show any data.

and in system preferences/sharing/ there is NO such checkbox for 'DVD or CD sharing'

As I already stated, you won't have a checkbox for DVD Sharing as you don't have a drive. That checkbox is for sharing out the CD/DVD, not for receiving the shared CD/DVD.

Did you check for Firewall settings as indicated in the link posted by dialabrain?

But, as dialabrain indicated in the posted excerpt, that installer disc may not be supported. There is really no way to tell.

Why doesn't my sharing folder show DVD or CD sharing option?

If you don't have a CD/DVD drive, then there would be nothing to share. The option isn't there for you to see other drives, but to share your own drive.

Remote share pops up but nothing shows in its location.

Do you mean you see "Remote Disc" in the Finder Sidebar as shown in the last screen shot on the page dialabrain linked?

If so, then your Mac is set up to find shared discs, but nothing is sharing anything out. If you are sharing out from a Windows computer, you have to install the DVD or CD Sharing Update as indicated in the article.

If not, check in the Finder Preferences, Sidebar and see if there is a checkbox to show Remote Disc in the sidebar.

yes I can see "remote disc" in the finder sidebar.

I am sharing out of a windows machine that I have already installed Dvd or Cd sharing update from apple.com and also enabled it in the control panel on the windows machine.

There is the 'remote disc' present but it doesn't show any data.

and in system preferences/sharing/ there is NO such checkbox for 'DVD or CD sharing'

That shouldn't matter as far as SEEING the files from the PC. The issue isn't whether installers will work, it's whether createurf8 can see any files in the remote folder. He can't, so there's something wrong with the PC setup. I have the same issue; my MacBook Pro sees nothing in the Remote Disk folder after following the installation procedure.

The issue isn't whether installers will work

Well, getting the Mac to see the CD is the first issue of course, but, although I am in no way an expert on CD sharing since I've never had to use it, it seems to me that the location of the installer CD (once recognized) is less relevant than the fact that the content of said CD needs to be installed on the Sierra Mac. And that will not work if it is a PowerPC app (which, in my case, it was).

Though it's kind of you to post to this topic, your admitted lack of knowledge about the process and insistence on worrying about software compatibility isn't useful. People search on the forums for solutions to a topic, in this case why we can't see the remote system. It's NOT more important that the software may not run. Respectfully, if you don't actually know what to do to get a remote PC to appear on a Mac, please don't post a comment, because it's not helpful. Thanks.

Though it isn't kind of you to criticize others (see the ToU), my reply is relevant because:

The OP was/is trying to install an older version of Final Cut which included a PowerPC installer (although he has not mentioned which exact version, it is rather safe to assume that it was PowerPC as most installers were). This means that even if he manages to "see" the install media, he won't be able to install it as the installation has to take place on the Mac which will not allow any PowerPC apps to run (I do have working knowledge regarding that scenario).

As per the ToU, you should address your concern about my contribution with the hosts. I will post comments when I feel it may be helpful.

Okay, let's remain civil. What makes you think the OP has PPC software? Final Cut was introduced over sixteen years ago, and the OP says nothing about what version he used, or for that matter, why he needs to reinstall from a disk. That's YOUR assumption. All he said was that it was an older version. FC has been released for a decade with Intel installers, and only recently (within a few years) has it been available solely via the App Store. Would you try to install 10+ year old software on a new computer if you were a professional?

Further, there's a reason that some editors prefer pre-FC-X versions, as there were major structural changes made to the software within the last few years that many in the video community objected to, yet the software still runs on today's Macs. Those versions are not available online.

And while it's certainly true that while you may post anything, anywhere, it's not of any value to other readers if you don't actually answer the question. We're (mostly) adults here, and we can figure out on our own if we can't do something after resolving the underlying issue of what's wrong. I'm suggesting that you consider the needs of the other thousands of readers when you post, that's all.

Those versions are not available online.

I know that. The OP obviously has a version on install disks; else he would not try to use CD sharing. And, the install disks were PPC. I know because I have them. I also know that they do not work on Intel Macs because I tried (I did say a workaround exists in my first post here). However, the app is universal and still runs in Sierra as long as you can get the components installed manually in the correct multiple locations. I am unable to confirm at this time if it (or other pro apps) will run in High Sierra until Apple publishes that info publicly.

That basically answers the part of the question "so I am running sierra OS and i'm trying to install my older Final Cut Pro" - it appears to be irrelevant whether the CD can be seen or not if it won't work even if it is - at least to me.

I'm suggesting that you consider the needs of the other thousands of readers when you post, that's all.

I consider the OP's question. And that I did. You are correct in one thing though: my answer does not relate to the CD sharing problem from a Windows machine.

This will be my last comment here.
