When opening the AirPods case lid nearby my unlocked iPhone, I get the charge indicator panel showing battery level of both, the AirPods and their case.
The same doesn't happen on my iPad. Is this the correct behavior, or is it my iPad having some problem?
All devices are updated to latest iOS version, as well as the AirPods are updated to latest available firmware.

On your iOS device
On your iPhone, open your case lid with your AirPods inside and hold your case close to your device. Wait a few seconds to see the charge status of your AirPods with charging case.
You can also check the charge status of your AirPods with charging case with the Batteries widget on your iOS device. The charge for your case appears only when at least one AirPod is in the case.
The AirPods screen is on the iPhone only. All other iOS devices use the Batteries widget.

For an unknown reason the battery level doesn’t show up in my battery widget on iOS11. Only if I open the lid I see the battery status.
Any idea if that has changed with iOS11 or how to show the battery level in the widget?

thanks for the reply. Having found the article a little confusing, I wanted to make sure that AirPods battery level panel opens up on the iPhone only and not on every iOS device.

Yes on iOS 11 the battery screen showing AirPods and charging case shows up on iPad when opening charging case but not in battery widgets
Correction now showing up in iOS 11.1 on widgets and case with AirPods picture on iPad
It will show in widgets on iPad if AirPods are connected to iPad. Likewise on iPhone only if connected to iPhone. When in case battery level shows on either but sometimes takes a while. IOS 11
