Sorting the files in Finder chronologically

Hi everybody

I do not understand how could I reach a really rigorous chronological (ascending or descending) order of the files (for example the ones in the following picture, in the Finder. The following image shows (in german) the sorting order that was chosen is "inserted on".

User uploaded file

Now this is not true! For example the dates in the "2016" group are (the first few ones):

14.9

9.7

6.5

9.7

14.9

...

so my question would be:

- how can I have a really true ascending or descending chronological sort of the files (like in Windows when you click on the column title and have the reversed arrow).

- how can I avoid the grouping by years and months?

I find this behaviour really confusing.

Thanks a lot for any hint

Best Regards

Claudio

The English equivalent of your sort order is "Date Added".

However, I'm not clear on what your "14.9, 9.7, 6.5, 9.7, 14.9" list is referring to. The image is very fuzzy, but don't see those characters in any of the names on the far right column, so where are these numbers coming from?

Do you wish to see the files sorted in order of their date created, or date last modified, or date added, or date opened attribute? I would suggest you use "List" mode rather than "Column" mode like you have your Finder window in (this is the second of the four grouping styles shown in the Finder window icons). Don't know the German equivalent but assuming the order lists are the same in English and German, these are the 7th, 6th, 5th and 4th in the list of options when you click on the sorting order icon, which is the fifth icon in the Finder window (am counting from left to right for icons and top to bottom for lists). When you use list mode of Finder, then you can click on the column once for ascending or again for descending order (you will see an up arrow or down arrow on the right edge of the attribute column title).

You can add whichever columns you wish to the ones that Finder shows by control-click or right-click in the column headings and clicking on the desired ones (if the attribute already has a checkmark, it is already being shown - so if you want to remove any columns already shown just click on one of the checkmarked items).

If I've misunderstood, sorry, but hope I'm guessing correctly what you're trying to accomplish.

Good luck...

Tag Claudio! dot.com is right...the sorting you want can best be viewed in "Als Liste" and not "Als Spalten", which doesn´t allow the sorting you want, as far as I understand the Finder! Just make sure you have a column showing "Erstellungsdatum". Check this by going to Finder > Darstellung > Darstellungsoptionen einblenden, and then clicking on "Erstellungsdatum". You can then sort by date from most recent to earliest by clicking on the little arrow symbol. I´ve included a screenshot which should make things clear for you! Hope this helps you! Tschüss, Ian.

You are not sorting. You are Arranging which really means Grouping.

If you set the Arrangement to None, then hold down the Option key while selecting the button or menu item, it will change to Sort by as opposed to Arrange by. The primary function of the button/menu item is Arrangement. Holding down the Option key gives you the Sort options.

You can also sort within each group.

You can also use the List View as already mentioned, but you can still arrange the List View, so make sure your arrangement is set to None.

dear dot.com, thanks a lot and sorry for my very badly expressed question. The numbers are the dates of the files, 14.9 means (in Italy and Germany and somewhere else in Europe): September, 14th. and so on.

You gave me the basic hint. I am using the wrong "mode" to list. I can understand, now. I was a little confused because I expected, nevertheless, a perfect chronological order. And that is not true, the dates are only about sorted, but not correctly.

Thanks a lot

Hallo Ian, guten Abend :-)

yes, that is the point. Finder seems to have a "sort order" that one can choose, but in the column view, it does not really respect what it was told to do. Not completely at least.

I understand that the more "window-like" representation is the list. I wanted to scroll with preview through all files (bills for example, or flight logs) from the newest to the oldest. And that I can do only in list mode.

Thanks a lot.

You're very welcome.

I like the way Barney described the issue - it's an arrangement and not a sorting order that you showed in your image posts of a Finder window.

Anyway, glad to see you're getting what you were hoping for, and your English is a lot better than my Italian or German ;-) Thanks also for explaining about the difference in dates with your "14.9, 9.7" etc - now I see what you meant.
