Profile crashing or automatically logging out

We have a late 2012 27" iMac running macOS Sierra 10.12.3. We have two profiles and my wife uses hers now more than I do. I have a MBP that is my primary computer so I use the iMac once every few days.

About twice a month I'll experience this strange issue (seemingly with only my profile) where I'll reach the login screen and the orange dot will not be next to my name. It's as if I logged out.

When I go to log into my account, there is no crash message but all the apps I previously had open will boot back up. Chrome has the message "Chrome did not shut down properly..." and I have some dialog boxes that I need to acknowledge.

With no evidence of a system crash, I'm led to believe that my profile might be crashing. Is that a possibility? Is there a way to look for the specific cause of it? I tried looking into the Console logs but not sure what I should specifically be looking for. Any way that I can debug the cause?

My wife doesn't recall having to log back into her profile at all, which leads me to believe it's isolated to my profile. There's no new software installed and automatic updates don't run if there are multiple users logged in, which is 99% of the time on this iMac. I manually log my wife's account out for system updates.

The last big change with this machine was that the entire front screen was replaced by Apple for a dust issue with the interior corners. They said there were no problems with the procedure and it worked fine for a month after we got it back.

EDIT: Automatic logout is not enabled in Security & Privacy

Being that this does not seem to happen in other user accounts it may be attributed to something within your user profile startup/login items, possibly a malware issue or something else user specific. I would suggest starting your troubleshooting with these Apple Support articles.

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support

macOS Sierra: Open items automatically when you log in

macOS Sierra: Protect your Mac from malware

Hope this helps!

I currently have the iMac in safe mode and will leave it like this for the next week or so to see if I can induce the issue. However, it's almost unusable with the safe mode screen flicker in the Chrome browser window. I have to reply to this thread from my phone.

One thing I forgot to mention in my original post was that my profile crashed as I was leaving it to login to my wife's account to log her out. The screen sort of jumped (flickered) and went directly to the login screen where I had lost my orange check mark. She was still logged in.

Is there any sort of safe software that I can run that will perform a malware scan? If I am able to induce this issue again, is there a specific place in the log that I should be looking?

Mar 22, 2017 9:51 AM in response to justinbmiller

Try running this program in your normal account when not in the Safe Mode, then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy Report” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

For malware, download this program which was written by Thomas Reed, a long time poster. The program will do the work for you which makes it easy.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac 10.8 and later

Mar 22, 2017 10:01 AM in response to Eric Root

I'll go ahead and try both solutions. I had to take it out of Safe Mode because the low level of graphics rendering made it almost unusable. I imagine SM is useful if you need to check (quickly) on whether start up items are the culprit. I currently have my profile logged in but no extra software running (Chrome, Messages, Mail). The only login items I have active are Dropbox and iTunes Helper.

This issue seems to crop up randomly and I've only experienced it first-hand once when I was trying to switch profiles. The other times that it's occurred was when the display is asleep (CMD+SHIFT+EJECT). I don't know it crashed until I wake up the screen and I'm back at the profile selection screen.

I'll report back with my findings. Thank you for your input.

Mar 24, 2017 11:07 AM in response to Eric Root

I'll try this and report back. I use Hippo Connect to link up my iPhone when we're using AirPlay with VLC. My Hippo Connect iPhone app lets me control VLC but the Daemon needs to be constantly running on the iMac. When we AirPlay directly through the QT app, I can use our Apple TV remote. I prefer the latter but it depends on the video file format.

I'll first test to see if my profile crashes after a session where I've connected my phone. If it does, I guess it's time to say bye bye to Hippo Connect. Thank you for having a look. I'll be back with what I find.
