What is the plug-in container in Notification Center's system preferences?

Earlier I was cleaning up my notification center in macOS 10.12.13 and noticed there is a plugin-container setting. I have no idea what this is. I googled and really only found out that this could possibly be Firefox related?

It's kind of driving me crazy. As I like to run a clean mac.
