Photos - what is an item?

Hi,

I cannot understand a variance in the way my Photos/Videos are summarised within Apples "Photos" across my MacBook Pro, iPhone 6s & iPad Air. With my MacBook Pro & iPhone, I have an identical number of photos & videos showing (2,773 photos, 649 videos), but with my iPad, it says 2,772 photos, 649 videos, 1 item.

A couple of questions;

1) why does my iPad say that one of the photo's is an 'item'?

2) how can I establish which photo it is?

3) how do I resolve this inconsistency?

Screenshots from all 3 devices attached.

Thanks in advance

N

An item is something other than a standard photo and may well be incompatible with iCloud Photo Library - a PDF for example

http://www.apple.com/icloud/photos/

When you save photos and videos to iCloud Photo Library, your memories are always kept exactly as you took them. All your images are held in their original formats at full resolution — JPEG, RAW, PNG, GIF, TIFF, and MP4, as well as special formats you capture with your iPhone, like slo-mo, time-lapse, 4K videos, and Live Photos. And any edits you make are reversible, so you can always go back to your original shot in iCloud.

Thanks LarryHN, this is a useful explanation of what an item is, but unfortunately does not help me understand why there is an inconsistency between the three devices, with only the iPad Air is saying I have an 'item' yet the total number of files across 3 devices is identical. How do I narrow down which file is being recognised as an 'item' by the iPad Air?

Thanks & regards

No idea - it is more likely to find an experienced iPad user in the iPad forum - this has nothing to do with Photos for Mac where you poeted

In Photos for Mac you would make a new smart album (file menu ==> new smart album) for Photos is unable to upload to iCloud Photo Library - the iPad may or may not have the same or similar function - An iPad user would be much more helpful
